Planned Giving Committee working to encourage charitable donations
The Almonte General Hospital/Fairview Manor (AGH/FVM) Foundation’s Planned Giving Committee is undertaking a number of activities to raise awareness about the many ways to plan and make charitable donations.
The Committee includes a cross-section of local financial professionals and advisors. Chaired by Paul Virgin, members include Art Solomonian, Christine Pierce, Kevin Guerard, Bill O’Hara and Gord Pike.
Foundation Chair Don Stewart and member Margaret Brunton are also members.
In addition to developing a Planned Giving Policy, the Committee has produced a brochure, which is available at various locations.
Last January, the Committee held a very successful estate planning seminar.
At the seminar Douglas Buchmayer, LLB, of Drache Tax Estates and Charity Law, Ben McNeely, CA, of Kelly Huibers and McNeely, Paul Virgin, CLU, of Time and Money Planners and Art Solomonian, CSA, of Mousseau and Associates talked about estate plans, wills, trusts, estate-related tax planning and various ways to incorporate charitable giving into an estate plan.
The Committee will hold a second estate planning seminar this fall, on a date to be determined.
Estate planning gives you the opportunity to ensure that those who depend on you have the resources to carry on.
It can also help minimize taxes, ensuring that more of your wealth goes to your heirs, or to the charity of your choice.
About 95 per cent of planned gifts are made through bequests in wills.
Other planned gifts include donations of appreciated securities, life insurance policies, RRSP/RRIF accumulations, real estate or property. Another option is to establish a charitable gift annuity.
Defining your wishes through a well thought out estate plan is an opportunity to create a lasting legacy.
If you are considering a planned gift, be sure to talk to an independent professional advisor.
