Job Purpose:
To undertake research including fieldwork, modelling and dissemination of results on the NERC funded grant ‘How does the development of particle scale structure control river scale morphology?’ and will be expected to assist with all aspects of the project.
Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities (6-10 bullet points maximum)
- Plan and carry out both field monitoring and flume experiments. Collect, process and analyse CT scan data, including the development of appropriate code.
- Undertake numerical modelling.
- Write and present the results of the research, both independently and collaboratively, for submission to high-ranking international peer-reviewed journals and other publications as appropriate;
- Communicate project findings and research results to a range of audiences, including UK and international scientific conferences as well as stakeholders and other end-users.
- Where opportunities arise, contribute to the development of related research proposals and applications for future research grants.

Internal & External Relationships: (nature & purpose of relationships)
- The project is being led by Dr Rebecca Hodge (Durham University) and regular project meetings will be held to keep all investigators up to date with project progress.
- Project partners in the UK and beyond will be engaged with throughout the project and to help enhance the impact of the findings.
Special Requirements:Ability to travel overseas to engage in conferences and with project partners (University of Loughborough, University of Glasgow, Halcrow, Deltares) as required.
Ability to work at Southampton for the first 18 months then Durham for the following 18 months.

Criteria / Essential / Desirable / How to be assessed
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
Degree in Earth Sciences, Civil Engineering, Physical Geography or other numerate discipline
PhD in arelevant numerical discipline(or close to submission)
Experience in numerical modeling, data analysis, and programming (e.g. in Matlab)
Demonstrable ability for innovation and original research
Ability to write clearly and concisely to a level consistent with publication in high-ranking international journals;
Demonstrable ability to present research results at conferences and communicate complex information to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Knowledge of fluvial geomorphology and/or sedimentology, and sediment transport
Some experience of field monitoring.
Some experience of flume experiments.
Experience in the manipulation of large point cloud/image manipulation (e.g. TLS or CT data) / Y
