Teacher’s guide

Introduction

This unit provides drivers with four lessons considering their needs of knowing places, directions and signs, besides a spate of ways to help foreigners to get around the city.

As the book’s philosophy underlies on the principles of Teaching English for Specific Purposes, an equal value on content and language objective is considered here. For this reason, students learn not only the form, but also how to apply them in everyday situations. In addition to this, different skills are integrated and enjoyable activities are proposed to motivate students and involve them in the learning process. The language tips draw drivers attention to important words, expressions, abbreviations and rules of English language. As a result, the unit “Don’t get lost” helps increasing drivers’ self- confidence to use new and specific vocabulary in order to succeed in the communication with their foreign customers.

Finally, the teacher’s guide will work as a reference for teachers, but we strongly recommend the use of other resources, such as internet, realias, pictures, photos, maps or any other items that will help students to maximize their learning and vocabulary.

Aim:

The aim of this lesson is to provide students with vocabulary to be used in the rest of the unit, as well as reinforce some vocabulary learnt in the previous units.

Exercise 1

As a warm up the teacher can bring to the classroom pictures of different places in town and with the whole class elicit from students the names of the places they already know. (many words might be familiar to students, such as drugstore, mall etc). Paste the pictures on the board and write the names of the places under each picture.

Alternatively, teachers can give half of the class some pictures and the other half the name of the places. Students should work together in order to match the names with the pictures they correspond to.

After doing this, students can complete exercise one. Tell students how important the correct pronunciation of words is. Some of the words form exercise one might be easy for them to recognize because they have became international words. However when these same words are heard in English they might sound different because they are stressed differently. Students should repeat the words out loud after you.

Most of the places should be known by students since they are in Belo Horizonte. Example: drogaria Araújo, igreja da Pampullha, Santa Casa, Palácio das Artes, etc.

Language in use

This part aims to teach students the use of there is and there are. The teacher can show students a big picture where they can use there is and there are. (A good picture would be a picture of a city, or a park with some people, or a busy street). The teacher can introduce there is and there are by giving two or three examples. And ask some students to give other examples.

After that explain the use of there is using the example sentences in the box.

Language tips

This part is presented to help to improve students´ vocabulary. It can be presented before or after exercise 2.

The teacher can ask students what are the abbreviations we use in letter envelopes in Brazil. Ask them if they know how they write the same abbreviations in English. Focus on the example in the box.

If the teacher wants she/he can bring envelopes to the classroom and ask students to fill in the envelopes, pretending they are sending a letter to someone abroad, or even write a postcard.

Exercise 2

This exercise is an opportunity for students to practice what they have just seen in Language in use. They should look at the map and complete with true (T) or (F). Remind students that they have to correct the false statements.

For further practice the teacher can ask each student to say a sentence about his/her neighborhood using there is or there are.

KEY:

  1. F – There isn’t a library on the ThirdAvenue.
  2. T
  3. F. There is a bookstore on this map OR There is a book store o the First Avenue.

Useful words

This part presents useful words for taxi drivers who deal mainly with tourists. The teacher should bring to class realia of these things, so students can see and touch them, what will help them to remember the new vocabulary later.

For further practice as a writingassignment and if the teacher feels students will be able to create one of these items, she/he can assign as homework, for example, create your own business card, or make a leaflet. Or the class can create something together or in group.

Exercise 4

Students can work in pairs to put the dialogues in order. After finishing it they should practice with their partner.

And finally ask students to write their own dialogues in pairs. Students who don’t feel too shy can present their dialogues to the class.

You: Yes, of course. There are many. Take this leaflet with you, there is information about the main points of the city.
Mrs. Nagata: Oh nice! Thank you very much.

Exercise 5

In this exercise students need to use the clues to write the name of the place according to each situation being described. In some sentences students can write either the place or the name of the place. For example: Araújo or drugstore.
