  1. Mission of the Department/Office:

The west coast of Madagascar boasts the largest and most intact stretches of mangrove forests in the WIO region. These forests are home to endangered endemic birds and provide shelter and breeding grounds for marine species that are critically important to local livelihoods. Mangroves also serve key ecological functions, from protecting coastlines to maintaining water quality. Despite their importance, large swaths of mangrove area have been lost, and these ecosystems remain underrepresented within the Madagascar protected area system.

Indeed, the Tsiribihina-Manambolo mangroves area has been identified as a WWF priority landscape. To preserve this area,WWF implement a landscape conservation programme which aims to establish an effective community-based natural resources management, and to improve traditional fisheries. These objectives contribute to the regional vision of conserving biodiversity by promoting sustainable use that benefits communities.

  1. Major Functions:

Under the supervision of the West Coast Mangroves Project Officer, the Volunteers will have the main function to support the implementation of measures to manage natural resources (especially mangroves and its associated resources), and to improve the livelihoods of local communities in the areas of intervention of WWF. They will contribute to ensure accountability and integration of communities and local authorities in the process of sustainable natural resource management and integrated development.

  1. Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist the landscape team in collecting useful information to decision making and to theadaptation of natural resources management.
  • Contribute to awareness-raising and informing activities of the local communities.
  • Write short articles for the web and produce amateur video films to make known the culture of the fishermen communities and their relations with mangroves.
  • Support WWF to the development of the mangrove ecotourism sector
  • Contribute to theprogrammeof literacy and support of women
  • Participate in the activities of community restoration/plantation of mangroves
  • Ensure the animation and mobilization of youth in the villages
  1. Profile:

Required Qualifications

  • Holders of at least a BA or a degree of third academic year
  • Mastering the techniques of shooting (photos and video)

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Good communication skills
  • Motivated to work in remote sites with difficult conditions
  • Adhere to WWF’s values: Knowledgeable, Optimistic, Determined and Engaging.

Internal–Interact with WWF Staff, particularly those intervening in the landscape of ManamboloTsiribihina

External –Interact with WWFfield partners and local communities
