Information for teachers who wish to prepare a risk assessment

prior to their visit.

General

  • Pittville Pump Room is a local authority-owned venue which complies with current safety regulations for a venue used by members of the public.
  • Electrical equipment is PAT tested.
  • Smoke and heat sensors are connected to the fire alarm system, and extinguishers and fire-fighting equipment are provided. Fire exits are kept clear and unlocked.
  • Fire drill documents are on display, and the Gamelan teacher will explain the fire drill.
  • Girls’ toilets, and a disabled toilet, are on the ground floor; boys’ toilets are on the first floor; there is one single toilet just outside the Gamelan room. Pupils must be supervised by a member of staff accompanying your group when using these facilities.

On arrival

  • School groups should arrive at the dedicated car park area for the Pump Room. Coach/minibus access is easiest via East Approach Drive, and coaches may stay in the car park or go to the dedicated coach parking at Cheltenham Racecourse just up the road.
  • Pupils should be supervised as they disembark from the coach/minibus. Access to the building via Reception is on level ground.
  • The gamelan teacher will greet your group, and accompany you upstairs to the East Room, where the workshops are held. If not, group leaders should alert reception staff at the Pump room that your group has arrived.

Location of the Gamelan workshop

  • The Gamelan is located on the top (third) floor of the Pump Roomin the East Room. Access is via the stairs; a lift is also available.
  • Children should be supervised on the stairs, and a member of staff should accompany any children who need to use the lift.
  • Children should be carefully supervised as they arrive on the upper floor and make their way to the East Room for their workshop. Please be aware that there is a balustraded area on the top floor which looks down onto the ground floor of the Pump Room, many metres below, though access to this is usually kept locked.

During the workshop

  • Children will be guidedby the Gamelan teacher, but accompanying teachers are expected to supervise their pupilsthroughout the workshop.
  • Children must remove their shoes before playing the Gamelan.
  • Comfortable clothing is recommended; children will be sitting on the floor to play the instruments.
  • The Gamelan is a collection of large tuned percussion instruments, some of which are very heavy. The Gamelan teacher will explain how to move around the instruments safely.
  • No electronic equipment is used during the Gamelan workshops.
  • Staff/accompanying adults may take photographs as long as this does not distract the pupils.

Departure

  • On departure from the East Room, children should be supervised by accompanying staff as they return to the ground floor by the stairs or the lift. They should also be supervised as they board the coach/minibus in the car park.
