Introduction

The Piano Librarian program is expanding the capabilities of the Accu-Tuner to give you essentially an unlimited amount of piano storage. As well as the ability to back up the tunings in memory, so that if your Accu-Tuner is stolen or fails, all your hard work creating the perfect tunings will not be lost. If you have any questions after reading this manual please feel free to email us at or call 800 327-8440. Preferably email, then as we get updates to the manual they can be sent out right away and answer the question that you have and other users of the program may have as well.

Items that arrived in the Box:

  • CD with Piano Librarian Software
  • USB Cable for connecting between the Accu-Tuner IV and your computer
  • Piano Librarian Operating Manual

Installing the Piano Librarian Software

The CD with the picture of an Accu-Tuner is the one. Put the CD in your CD drive, if the program does not run set up automatically:

1)Point to and click the START button

2)Click on RUN

3)Select the correct letter for your CD Drive.

4)Select SET UP and hit return

Follow the instructions for installing the Piano Librarian program to your hard drive.

Once the software is installed, you are almost ready to offload tunings from your Accu-Tuner. The software will need to have the Accu-Tuner IV check box set for communicating through USB to the Accu-Tuner IV. In the title bar of the Piano Librarian software, towards the right side of the gray title bar there is a checkbox “format SAT4”, use your mouse to click off the checkbox. With the Piano Librarian program running, SAT 4 box checked off in top title block, plug the supplied cable into a USB port on your computer, plug into the Accu-Tuner IV and then turn on the Accu-Tuner IV. This is the final step to set up the Piano Librarian software to communicate with the Accu-Tuner IV.

Hooking up your Accu-Tuner IV

Once the software (Piano Librarian) is loaded and connecting the USB cable between the Accu-Tuner IV and the computer should start the communication. The Accu-Tuner IV will display USB in the display and the control of the Accu-Tuner IV will be handled by the Piano Librarian software. The Piano Librarian should have an SAT IV drop down menu with the following choices: “FIND DEVICE”, “USB Send” and “USB Get”. When you plug in the cable between the computer and the Accu-Tuner IV, the Accu-Tuner should be recognized automatically, if not then select the FIND DEVICE command to invoke the communication. USB Send is selected to send tunings from the Piano Librarian software over to the Accu-Tuner IV. USB Get is selected to have the software offload the tunings from your Accu-Tuner into the Piano Librarian software.

File Save

Once you have offloaded the tunings it would be wise to save the tunings to disk. From the MENU Bar, select FILE, SAVE, and then choose the location and file name to save the tunings. It would be wise to set up a new folder to save the tunings from your Accu-Tuner.

USB Send

Sending tunings to your Accu-Tuner will overwrite the tunings in memory, which could be disastrous if you had not backed up your aural tunings. Make sure you have offloaded and backed up your tunings before sending new tunings to your Accu-Tuner.

All the tunings that are on the TUNING screen will be sent over the USB cables to the memory of the Accu-Tuner IV.

Edit

You will be pleasantly surprised with all the different ways that you can manipulate tunings to get exactly the tunings you want and have them in the memory in exactly the order you desire.

There are two locations for piano tunings in the Piano Librarian program, the blue background is the TUNING area and the pink background is titled the LIBRARY area.

The TUNING area is used to arrange the tunings to be sent over to the Accu-Tuner, the LIBRARY section is a staging area to copy/append tunings over to the TUNING area. Once the tunings are set up the way you would like them on the TUNING window you can then send them over to the Accu-Tuner.

Functions performed in the TUNING window are:

1)Delete – will delete selected tunings

2)Graph – view graph of tunings

3)Header – edit the header

4)Math – Average, Difference, Offset, Sum or create “zero” tunings

5)Temperament - Add a temperament to a tuning

Functions performed in the LIBRARY window are:

1)Append – add tunings onto tunings window at the end of present tunings

2)Copy – take the selected tunings and completely overwrite tunings window

3)Insert – will insert selected tunings onto tunings window

If you want to rearrange, pick and choose tunings to be sent to the SAT, first load the tunings to the library window and then append, copy or insert them to the tuning window.

To load tunings into the LIBRARY window, select LIBRARY from the menu bar, press the OPEN button, and then select the file that you would like to load. The Piano Librarian Disk has a file on it listed as Library Tunings, which if you open has all the generic tunings and blank pages to get started with.

Library Window Functions

Append

While you are in the Library window you can select one or multiple tunings to add onto the end of the tunings on the tuning window. To select one tuning, move the mouse to point to the desired tuning and left click on the tuning, and the click on the APPEND button. If you would like to select multiple tunings use one of the following methods

1)To select multiple tunings that are all in a row, use the mouse to left click on the first tuning, next hold down the SHIFT key and then click on the last desired tuning. This will highlight all the tunings between the first and second time you click the mouse.

2)To select tunings that are scattered, hold down the CTRL key and with the mouse click on the desired tunings. If you click on a tuning by mistake click on it again and it will be un-highlighted.

Once the desired tunings are highlighted then click on the APPEND button, and the tunings will be transferred over to the tuning window.

Copy

When you copy one or many tunings from the library window to the tunings window the program will overwrite all the tunings on the tunings window. If you have tunings on TUNING window, be sure to select the APPEND or INSERT command on the LIBRARY window to avoid overwriting the tunings already on the tuning window.

Insert

To insert a piano or group of pianos between two existing pianos tunings:

1)In the TUNING window click the cursor to the location to insert the tuning or tunings

2)Switch to the LIBRARY window by pressing the LIBRARY button

3)Select the tuning or tunings from the LIBRARY window

4)Click on the INSERT button.

To select multiple tunings in a row:

1)Click the cursor on the first tuning to insert

2)Hold down the SHIFT key on the computer keyboard

3)Click the cursor on the last piano to insert.

All the tunings between the first and the second click of the cursor will be highlighted and ready to insert.

To select a variety of tunings:

1)Hold down the CTRL key on the keyboard

2)Click the cursor on the desired tunings to insert

Every tuning that you click on will be highlighted and ready to insert. If you selected a tuning by mistake, you can un-highlight the tuning by clicking on it again (with the CTRL key held down).

Tuning Window Functions

Delete

If there are tunings on the tuning window that you would like to delete, use the method described above to highlight the tunings you would like to delete and then on the MENU BAR select EDIT and then select DELETE.

Graph

If you would like to view a graph of a tuning, all you need to do is point to the tuning on the TUNING window and then click on the GRAPH button. By pressing the OCT up or down buttons and the detailed information displayed will jump by octaves, NOTE up or down buttons you can move through the graph note by note. You can also move through the graph by pointing to the keyboard at the bottom of the graph with your cursor and clicking on the appropriate note.

Once the graphing program is open you are able to select which tuning you are viewing by pressing the PAGE UP button to move up to the next tuning or the PAGE DOWN button to view preceding tuning.

Header

To edit the headers, all you need to do is double click on the appropriate header and the text will appear near the top of the screen. Now you can edit the header as desired and then click on the REPLACE button to update the header listing.

SAT III owners note: if you move the location of the FAC numbers in the header, the SAT III will not find the correct FAC numbers on that page of memory using the green SHIFT button and STRETCH buttons. Refer to SAT III manual page 15, “Viewing FAC Numbers”.

Math

There are four different math functions that you can perform on a tuning and also under the math function is the ability to create a zero tuning.

1)Average

2)Difference

3)Offset

4)Sum

The Average, Difference and Sum functions require that the tunings have the same partials for the selected tunings or the procedure will not work. If the program did not perform the check for matching partials between tunings: the results would not be meaningless.

Average

The average function allows you to take two or more tunings and find the note by note average of the selected tunings; this method was used years ago to create the first generic tunings. It also can be very useful for tuning two pianos together for a recital. To average two or more pianos, highlight the two pianos to be averaged:

1)From the MENU bar select EDIT

2)Then select MATH

3)Then select AVERAGE

4)Click OK

5)You will be prompted to select a page, click on the appropriate tuning for creating the average of the tunings. (The tuning on the selected page will be overwritten, be careful)

Difference

The difference function allows you to take two piano tunings and find the difference between the two tunings.

1)Highlight the two pianos

2)From the MENU bar select EDIT

3)Then select MATH

4)Then select DIFFERENCE

5)Click OK

6)Click on the appropriate page for calculating the difference of the tunings.

Offset

This routine alters the tunings up to  fifty cents. If you generally tune a piano at 440 Hz and a performer is requesting the piano tuned at 441 or 442, you can use this function to add four or eight cents to the tuning.

1)Select the tuning or tunings to be altered

2)From the menu bar select EDIT

3)Select MATH

4)Select OFFSET

5)Enter the number of cents up to plus or minus fifty cents.

6)Click on OK

Now the tuning will be altered by the cents entered in step five above.

Sum

This will take the selected pianos and add them.

1)Select the tuning or tunings to be altered

2)From the menu bar select EDIT

3)Select MATH

4)Select SUM

5)Click on OK

6)Click on location for the results to be calculated

Zero Tuning

This routine will create a tuning with the FAC partials and zero cents deviation for each note.

1)Select the tuning or tunings to be altered

2)From the menu bar select EDIT

3)Select MATH

4)Select ZERO TUNING

All the tunings you had highlighted will now have zero cents deviation for all eighty-eight notes.
