Autumn Term 2015

Physical Education at Rabbsfarm Primary School

Rabbsfarm Primary School recognises the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of the children. In addition we believe an inspiring PE curriculum and outstanding extra-curricular activities have a positive influence on the academic achievement, concentration and attitude of the children.

Our PE curriculum

This year we are teaching core values in PE which are aspiration, respect, perseverance, honesty and happiness.

A wide range of PE is delivered to the pupils, which aims to engage and challenge all children.

Sports taught are wide and varied, both during the day and after school curricular clubs. Opportunities include gymnastics, basketball, rugby, cricket, football, dance and athletics.

Dance was extremely popular this year with a Dance Club taking place in Year 1, Year 5&6 which helped to increase the number of girls attending sports clubs over 2014/15. Some Year 5&6 pupils attended Invictus Juniors at Brunel University where they could have a go at events such as Wheelchair Basketball, High Jump and other games which were planned. Queens Park Rangers football coaches also worked with children in Year 1, 2, 5 &6. Playground buddy training also took place so children in Year 5&6 could support children in the KS1 playground at lunchtimes. Girls in Year 4&5 attended a football club which was set up following a request from the children. A Dodgeball club took place for Year 4 which the children were very enthusiastic about and happy to participate. Primary Sporting Development also took little groups of children to do small team sided gamesto increase confidence with the children. We also had coaches/teachers working with NQT’s and other classroom teachers to increase subject knowledge in Games and Dance.
It was clear to see during our fantastic sports week in June that the children are attaining extremely well in Physical Education. To challenge Year 5&6 pupils, they had their Sports Day at Brunel University Sports Park. Linford Christie and some of the Great Britain athletes cheered on our children at the finish line during the sprints. Year 3&4 had their sports day together at Rabbsfarm making use of our brand new playground. Nursery and Reception used our all-weather surface MUGA (Multi-Use-Games-Area) and Year 1&2 completed our Sports Week at our school.
Pupil survey comments from July 2015 include:
From Year 1 pupils: ‘I know how to dribble and play better football.’
‘I’m trying to do Basketball at home now.’
A Year3 girl said: ‘I can be fast enough to catch the balls now.’
When asked the question how has the club helped you? The response from a Year 3 boy was: ‘We play games that focus on our skills.’
Year 6 comments include: ‘I couldn’t Dance before but now I can.’
‘He didn’t give up even though we found it hard.’
‘We were set challenges and we learnt new tricks.’
‘My shots used to curl but now they are straight.’
Children also commented on how they liked helping younger children in the club as they made new friends. This will be considered when planning for clubs during 2015/2016.
