3.THE FACULTY OF LIFE SCIENCES

The Faculty of Life Sciences has one department located on the City Campus and all of its other organisational units located on the Bundoora West Campus of RMIT.

The Faculty provides a comprehensive range of TAFE, undergraduate and postgraduate courses in biomedical, plant, environmental and health sciences and nursing. In keeping with the traditions of RMIT, these courses give particular emphasis to practical and vocational applications of the skills and knowledge taught.

The commercial activities of the Faculty are coordinated by the Industry Training and Consultancy Unit. Among the Unit’s activities are the running of short courses and tendered projects, and customising training programs for industry, both on and offshore.

The Faculty offers programs locally, in regional Victoria, nationally and internationally.

The Faculty is continuing to develop and expand its already extensive research activities, which are of high quality and the outcomes of which benefit the community. Currently the research strengths of the Faculty are in areas of environmental management, plant, animal and human biotechnology, pharmaceutical sciences (including drug and vaccine development), physiological sciences, human performance, early diagnosis and treatment of disease, and community health. In addition, in association with the relevant professions and industry partners, the Faculty is committed to developing strong research activity in the areas of complementary medicine (including Chinese medicine), nursing and midwifery, radiation therapy, medical imaging and educational practice.

  1. THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Nursing and Midwifery is committed to being at the forefront of professional education in areas of developing people for employment.

As well as undergraduate nursing courses, the Department offers coursework and research programs in

mental health, family and child health, critical care, rehabilitation, midwifery, creative arts therapy and

advanced nursing practice. The Department conducts courses in Melbourne, Hamilton and Sale in rural Victoria and South-East Asia.

The Department is located at the Universities Bundoora West Campus on the 6th level of the Siddons

Building (building 201) and has an establishment of 30 full-time academic staff including four Professors

and two Associate Professors. The work of the disciplines is supported by a total of nine laboratory

and administrative staff members.

Over 700 students are currently undertaking the undergraduate programs, and approximately 300

students undertaking post-graduate programs with a further 30 undertaking Masters by course work

and Higher degrees by research.

Research within the Department addresses real world issues in nursing and health practice. Particular areas of

research interest are child and family nursing and health, midwifery, nursing ethics, transcultural nursing and

cross cultural health, complementary therapies in nursing, aged care and a range of aspects related

to clinical nursing practice and policy development.

5.JOB SUMMARY

The PA is responsible for the provision of personal administrative assistance to the Director - Research and Director - Postgraduate Studies, and until instructed otherwise, to the Director - Undergraduate Studies.

6.REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the Department Services Manager, but will work on a day-to-day basis with the three Directors.

7.SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

Position Accountabilities

7.1Provide efficient personal administrative assistance to the Director - Research, Director - Postgraduate Studies and Director - Undergraduate Studies, including:

  • diary management;
  • organising meetings, teleconferencing, video-conferencing and other general activities as they arise;
  • drafting, proofreading, wordprocessing of documents eg. briefing papers and reports.

7.2Co-ordinate the dissemination of information in order to support the Professors/Directors, and ensure appropriate follow up action.

7.3Undertake photocopying and printing requests, undertake library searches, the gathering and collating of documents and different material as required.

7.4Liaise with the Faculty Academic Administration Unit and Department office as required.

7.5Assist in the creation and maintenance of the Department’s document management system as required.

7.6Provide back-up support to other academics as directed.

7.7Provide assistance to the support team as necessary.

Personal Accountabilities

7.8Engage in ongoing training and development to enhance teaching, research, management, administrative and IT skills, in accord with the Faculty of Life Sciences commitment to continuous quality improvement in all its activities.

7.9Assume joint responsibility for career development by actively participating in various activities (mentoring, job rotation, secondments and joint group projects) and producing a jointly agreed development plan identifying key areas which will assist in your personal and professional development, these should be consistent with the Faculty Centre’s strategic goals.

Corporate Accountabilities

7.10Contribute to the strategic direction setting and policy making processes of the University and the Section by participating in key Group, Section and University forums and undertaking specific Section level project/tasks

8.QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of an Associate Diploma in Business or Office Administration or demonstrated relevant experience.

9.KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

9.2Excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to high-quality customer service.

9.3Demonstrated ability to effectively work as part of a team.

9.4Proven time-management and organisational skills, ability to work to deadlines is essential

9.5Proven high level of computer literacy, including the use of Microsoft Office and word and spreadsheet database. Knowledge of Endnote& SPSS would be an advantage

9.6Demonstrated ability to organise and prioritise work independently and complete tasks with tight timelines.

10.OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION

The appointee may be required to work outside normal business hours from time to time.
