Dear PADE Colleague:

On behalf of the Pennsylvania Association of Developmental Educators, we invite you to submit a proposal for presentation or poster session at PADE’s 2010 Conference in Hershey, PA. This year’s theme, “Cutting Edge Strategies in Developmental Education,” will focus on sharing innovative and research-based strategies shown to improve students’ ability to successfully achieve their academic goals.

Many of us who are in the field each day have little time to share the innovative approacheswe use in teaching and learning. In addition, we have little time to share our innovative best practices with our own colleagues, never mind sharing them with colleagues from across the Commonwealth. This conference is a prime opportunity for you to share with fellow developmental educators your tried and true best methods in administration, teaching, tutoring, and advising.

In order to prepare for your session, two questionsto ask yourself are--What articles and research have helped me to develop my best approaches to developmental students? What innovative methods have I used that have brought the students and/or the program success?

The PADE 2010conference will provide a forum for educators to share, debate, and collaborate on ways to make these experiences happen. We welcome your contribution to making this conference an opportunity for everyone to share and to learn methods, techniques, and strategies for increasing student success.

We would encourage you to read the enclosed proposal guidelines carefully as you contemplate submitting a proposal and feel free to contact us if you are unsure about its fit with the conference theme. None of us wants to miss a great presentation with outstanding ideas because how it relates to the conference theme may not be readily apparent.

We look forward to your proposals and seeing you at the Hotel Hershey!

Sincerely,

Mary Ann KlickaMedea Rambish

PADE 2010Presentation and Poster Session Proposal Guidelines

PADE 2010 desires to draw on your expertise and experience to show how you are using research in designing innovative practices. While hearing about success can be very useful and should be celebrated, sharing your struggles with your colleagues is just as beneficial. Therefore, whatever your choice of proposal topics and objectives, we would like you to consider the following questions. Then, plan to incorporate your answers in some way into your session.

  • What innovative practice am I proposing to share with participants?
  • What research is integral to the development of this practice?
  • Why is it important to do thissession?
  • How successful is the practice; are there any data to share with participants?
  • What are the challenges of this practice?
  • How can I engage participants in understanding and utilizing this practice?

The following list is not exclusive but identifies some potentially rich areas for proposal topics:

  • Administration – perspectives/issues/strategies
  • Assessment – diagnostic/curriculum/program
  • Basic skills instruction
  • Brain research and learning
  • Counseling/advising – issues/strategies
  • Learning assistance - centers/strategies/services
  • Tutoring
  • Research & Retention
