PennCORP Student Leader Application

Thank you for your interest in serving as a Student Leader for PennCORP 2015! If selected, you will need to be on campus for our Student Leader training on Saturday, August 15 – Monday, August 17. In addition to the mandatory training, Student Leaders will also need to be available for the entirety of PennCORP, which will begin Monday, August 17 and runs through Thursday evening, August 20. If you cannot participate in the entire program and training, please do not apply. If you will be living in an on-campus residence in the fall, Civic House will cover the early move-in fee beginning on Saturday, August 15. You do not need to be a former PennCORP participant to apply. Applications are due by Friday, April 24 at 10am.

Spring 2015 Schedule

If accepted as a Student Leader for PennCORP 2015, we will be having a Student Leader Orientation on Friday, May 1 (Friday of Reading Days). The orientation will be 11:30-1:30pm (lunch provided) at Platt House. Additionally, there will be another meeting this spring with your Co-Directors – day and time TBD.

Civic House Social Justice Framework

  1. Exploration of self-awareness and identity, including addressing issues of privilege, oppression, and power
  1. Exploration of root causes of social issues including an analysis of intersecting injustices on individual, organizational, and institutional levels
  1. Engagement in praxis – cycles of action and critical reflection meant to enhance learning and critical thinking and lead to thoughtful action
  1. Exploration of different approaches to achieving justice including but not limited to service, advocacy, voting, philanthropy, community organizing and being a good neighbor.
  1. Emphases on mutually beneficial collaborations with community members that respond to needs initiated by community partners and implement work with community partners.

Application Questions

Please respond to all of the questions below and limit each answer to no more than 250 words. In addition, attach a current resume of job/volunteer history including a list of your community service, civic engagement and activism experiences.

1) Describe one civic engagement experience in which you’ve spent a significant amount of time and of which you’ve found particularly rewarding. Describe this activity in some detail, explaining what you did, why you did it, and how it made a difference in both your life and the lives of others.

2) Critical reflection is an essential component of PennCORP. Please explain why you think this is important, the impact reflection has had on your own civic engagement experiences and how you would incorporate it into your role as a student leader of PennCORP.

3) Please describe how your experience(s) in civic engagement have helped you grow in your understanding of one or more pieces of Civic House’s Social Justice Framework (see above). What elements of the Social Justice Framework do you think are important to include in PennCORP?

4) One of Civic House’s core values is community building and group development. Can you describe an experience where you had to lead a group? What was your role? How did you foster community building and group development?
