Seeking Applicants for Unique Summer Internship at Penn State Center Philadelphia with Penn State Extension Nutrition Links

The City of Philadelphia is home to many thriving community-based non-profit organizations whose work is dedicated to improving the lives of all Philadelphians. Thisinternship is a unique opportunity for students interested ina real urban immersion experience focused on community nutrition, nutritioneducation, food systems, food access, urban agriculture and/or public health.

We are seeking one enthusiastic undergraduate student from the College of Health & Human Developmentfor summer 2017. The selected intern will haveample opportunity to sharpen their knowledge and interpersonal skill sets, gain hands-on experience atinner-citypartner sites and build their professional networks.

This is an unpaid internship. Spanish-speaking skills are a plus, but not a requirement. Experience with social media is an extra plus. Hours to be determined (May 30-August 4).

We are seeking a motivated self-starter undergraduate community nutrition or dietetics student from Penn State’s College of Health & Human Development for a unique urban internship opportunity with Penn State Extension in the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. Our office is located in Old City, near the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and other major historic sites, but youwill be visiting numerous Penn State Extension partner sites throughout the city.

The intern will work directly with Penn State Extension Nutrition Links outreach program and assist with teaching basic nutrition classes and cooking skills for underserved adults with school-age children living in low-income, inner city neighborhoods in Philadelphia County.

The ideal candidate must have a strong interest in all that a major urban environment has to offer, and be open to navigating the city via public transportation, understanding SNAP benefits and food access systems in a high poverty environment, and interacting and working with people of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.

Student will work with Nutrition Links supervisor and partner sites on a food literacy and social media project for low-income audiences. Research components include a survey of best practices in food, nutrition and health literacy and reading level analyses of nutrition program materials. Findings will be utilized to developinnovative food and nutrition learning tools for adult food literacy program participants. Student will also prepare and teach a food and nutrition lesson for our para-professional team.
