Objective:

DOK 2 8.2b.7 TSW predict a logical outcome based upon reading and comprehending chapters of The Giver.

Materials:

Pen, Paper, Worksheet, The Giver, Overhead, Transparencies

Do Now: (10 min)

In 2-3 sentences give a synopsis of the chapter we read yesterday in The Giver.

Set: (5 min)

TTW review the previous period’s lesson.

Yesterday you learned about comma splices with Ms. Lightsey. What do we use in a sentence to fix a comma splice?

TTW state the objective.

This period we will read and comprehend chapters of The Giver.

TTW relate the lesson to the students’ by involving the students.

Who do you love the most in your life? Why do you love this person? Can you imagine not being able to love someone because you don’t know what love feels like? Today we will see if Jonas and their community have love.

Independent Practice:

TTW review predicting outcomes.

TTW give directions to the students about the activity.

There are 5 stations around the room with pictures. I want you to write 2-3 sentences for each station. Predict what you think each picture indicates about The Giver. When we change stations we will move numerically. Bring something to write on and with to each station. Remember we are predicting what you think these pictures will mean in The Giver.

TSW go around the room and write their predictions.

TSW share their predictions with the class.

Guided Practice:

TTW instruct the students on reading and pass out the question worksheet.

TSW read The Giver and answer questions dealing with each chapter.

Once the students get to the warfare section of The Giver:

STAI 7 TTW give the students a brief lesson on the Civil War.

TTW show pictures on the overhead dealing with the Civil War.

TTW ask the students how the pictures relate to the memory that Jonas just received.

TSW continue reading and answering questions.

TSW hopefully finish ch: 14, 15, and 16

Closure:

TTW restate the objectives.

This period you read and comprehended chapters of The Giver.

TTW review the lesson.

I need a synopsis of what we just read. Tell me about some of the memories that Jonas received. How did these memories affect Jonas?

TTW preview the next lesson.

Next period you will learn about writing an article with Ms. Lightsey.

Assessment:

Informal: TTW walk around to make sure the students are answering the questions correctly during independent practice. TTW keep the students on track and make sure they are understanding the concepts of The Giver while the students are reading and answering questions.

Formal: TSW be formally assessed on Friday with a final exam. TTW record both of these grades into the grade book.
