Description:

This course concentrates on career development theories and their implication for appraisal of vocationally related interests, aptitudes and personality characteristics. It will emphasize the practice of career development and planning for those individuals and groups desiring career counseling in various settings.

Rationale:

This course provides theoretical foundations of vocational counseling from both a Christian and secular perspective. Exploration of interventions, assessments and technological resources is also included.

Objectives:

The objectives are designed to meet CACREP requirements, Section 2.K.4.a-i. In particular, a student that successfully completes this course will be able to:

1.  Appreciate historical and current theoretical perspectives on vocational development and explore the correlation between theory, assessment and career planning.

2.  Identify and use career, educational, occupational and labor market information resources, computer-based information systems and other electronic career information systems to provide career counseling.

3.  Implement technology-based development applications and strategies, including computer-assisted career guidance systems and appropriate world-wide web sites.

4.  Develop the ability to plan, organize, implement and evaluate career development programs and services in educational and community settings.

5.  Identify relevant assessment instruments in career planning and decision making.

6.  Acquire beginning proficiency in planning, placing, evaluating and following up with career and educational development plans.

7.  Experience the role of vocational test interpreter and counselor.

8.  Understand the need for life-long learning necessitated by vocational and theoretical changes.

9.  Understand career development issues among diverse populations and select career counseling processes, techniques and resources applicable to specific populations.

10.  Understand ethical issues in career development interventions and abide by ethical standards of career planning and assessment.

Technology:

Students will need access to Moodle through the CCU website. It is imperative that students maintain their pace with the rest of the class. While this is an online class, it is designed as a learning environment in which all members will move through the class material as a group. Discussions, tests, readings are designed around the class schedule (see below). Eight units have been prepared and work in each unit must be completed in accordance with the course schedule. See Guidelines on Missed Work or Exams below.

Requirements/Grading:

1.  Reading of assigned texts.

2.  Participation in online discussion among class members regarding additional reading or application exercises.

3.  Various application exercises, along with exams are given in the semester. Application exercises are due the last day of the unit. Exams will be available online, with the exception of the Career Counseling Plan, and will be posted 48 hours prior to the last day of the unit only. Exams will consist of multiple-choice questions. Exceptions due to health or other factors must be approved by the instructor.

Grade Scale:

This class will use the seminary grading scale. Please refer to the CCU Student Handbook. Point value for each assignment will be provided the first day of class.

Guidelines for Course Work:

IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO DETERMINE IF THIS IS THE RIGHT TIME TO TAKE THIS COURSE. The course assignments are planned to support your learning and none of them should be dismissed as unimportant.

Guidelines on Missed Work or Exams

Written assignments will be accepted late but there will be a 5% penalty on all late work, per point value of that assignment. Examinations will not be given late unless there is a medical emergency or family emergency. If student is unable to take exam as assigned, the student will have one week to make arrangements with professor to taking the exam. It is the discretion of the professor to reduce the grade for the exam due to late entry.

Policy on Academic Integrity:

If you cheat on an exam or turn in work that is not your own, you will receive a 0 for that work and the Counseling Academic Committee may take additional action. Please refer to your CCU Student Handbook for complete details on the seminary policy on academic integrity.
