  1. Position overview

To manage the operations of the Visual Arts & Indigenous Media Units; to engage in and co-ordinate the preparation and delivery of course material in related areas of study; to provide academic leadership, mentoring and supervision of staff; to ensure smooth administrative functioning of the section. Creative industry experience is required; experience developing innovative programs of media study and/or production; ability to engage in and be responsive to the training needs of the Indigenous Media and Broadcasting and Visual Arts sector; superior project management skills and experience including securing funding from and reporting to the Federal and/or Territory government departments, amongst others.

  1. Detailed statement of duties

1.Manage the operations of the Visual Arts & Indigenous Media Units, including administration of budgets, staffing and teaching programsType statement of duty here.

2.Initiate and develop curriculum and course materials for the vocational, education and training (VET) sector.

3.Provide academic leadership and co-ordination in the development of curriculum, teaching and learning plans, program delivery, assessment and moderation, resource development, course evaluation and review, staff development, including mentoring and research.

4.Ensure the maintenance of quality standards within the section, including assessment validation and moderation, and adherence to Institute and industry policies and requirements.

5.Consult with, and where necessary, counsel students and staff in regard to academic progress.

6.Prepare and deliver lectures, practical workshops and seminars.

7.Contribute significantly to industry and/or discipline field at a local, Territory, and national level.

8.Promote and negotiate the IMU’s VET educational programs and projects with communities and the industry.

9.Broad administrative functions, including administrative and advisory functions in relation to student enrolment, attendance, course participation and progression as well as section budgets.

10.Attendance at Divisional and Institute meetings and a major role in planning and committee work.

11.Identify and seek out funding to support and develop the operations of the section.

12.Oversee the planning and management of technical requirements within the section, including the identification and purchase of equipment to keep up to date with changing trends and industry needs, the maintenance and replacement of equipment, and the identification of funds for these purposes. (This includes the management of the Unit/Division/Institute’s transmitter site).

13.Liaise with community and media organisations for the provision of localised training opportunities, i.e. through student work placements and/or through partnerships or joint delivery.

14.Participate in conferences, and publish articles and papers in Broadcast content in the field of journalism, screen and/or media studies.

15.Undertake relevant educational research and academic reviews and maintain personal professional development as well as mentoring.

16.Other duties as directed by the head of Division.

  1. Essential selection criteria

1.(a) Undergraduate and graduate qualifications equivalent to at least five(5) years of higher education in media studies, or a related discipline, and substantial industry experience relevant to the position. (b) Must have Certificate IV in Training and. Demonstrated relevant vocational competencies, at least to the level of those to be delivered and assessed.

2.Knowledge of, and experience in curriculum design, course development, Vocational Education and Training (VET) and in the relevant accreditation processes.

3.Demonstrated capacity to work within the social, political and cultural environments of Indigenous Australian communities and organisations, and ability to empathise and communicate freely with students.

4.Demonstrated capacity to manage budgets, including the ability to identify and obtain funding from various sources and to provide appropriate and timely acquittals and oversee management of physical assets.

5.Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary developments in the HE and VET sectors, particularly relating to broadcast (radio and TV), screen, media and Visual Art industries.

6.Demonstrated capacity to lead a culturally diverse team, work effectively with others in a team, supervise, mentor as well as operate independently of direct supervision.

7.Demonstrated capacity to undertake research and other professional development activities.

8.Must be able to undertake travel throughout the Northern Territory as a light plane passenger and as a Class C licensed driver of vehicles on unformed roads and be prepared to stay in the range of accommodation available to Institute staff.

1.Experience in remote Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities and towns.

2.Demonstrated achievement in the field of journalism and/or screen and media studies through publishing and/or broadcast, and research activities.
