BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Mr. F. Leigh Kerr worked for the Alaska Department of Health and conducted the first X-ray survey north of the Arctic Circle. Leigh was recruited through the U.S. Public Health Service to survey and determine the extent of tuberculosis among the Native people. The survey took two years and included all villages with a population over seven. It was conducted under adverse conditions and portable equipment, including local generators. Transportation depended on weather and availability (bush pilots, dog team or skin boat). Recruited for his skills as an x-ray technician, Leigh supervised additional x-ray technicians and was responsible for maintaining the x-ray equipment in the various health units. From 1952 to 1958 he continued to work for the Alaska State Department of Health as regional business manager in the Anchorage office.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS NOTE

These slides document the locations where Kerr worked and reflect his experience in Alaska.

Slides are arranged geographically with the exception of nos. 238-251, which are in southeast Alaska. There are images of people, structures, transportation by boat, airplane and dogsled, and village scenes across Alaska. Dates on the slides range from 1948 to 1959.
