Part-time Pastor Job Description
Living Word Lutheran Church is a small mission church in Fredericksburg, VA. As former members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA), we are now affiliated with the North American Lutheran Church (NALC). Living Word members’ decision to leave the ELCA was effectively made on December 13, 2009.
We have a talented member base and are looking for a pastor to guide, direct and lead us to accomplish our vision. After evaluating our resources and financial circumstances, we have determined that the position will be as a part-time pastor. We understand that a part-time pastoral position will not fully provide a sustainable living wage. All responsibilities will be on a 20 hour average per week schedule. This flexible schedule will allow you to pursue other wages as needed. Our hope is to have our congregation grow both financially and physically to enable us to transition to a full-time position.
We currently share a facility with Vine Covenant Church on the south-east side of Fredericksburg, Virginia. The facility is located at 2601 Wheatland Woods Drive, Fredericksburg, VA, 22407.
We expect pastoral duties to include the following:
1. Lead liturgical services, administer sacraments, and deliver the sermon (following the NALC calendar) a minimum of 48 Sundays including Easter and in addition to services such as Christmas-Eve, Good Friday and possibly Ash Wednesday.
2. Coordinate and refine the worship service with the Worship and Music team as needed throughout the year to improve the worship experience of the congregation.
3. Attend a minimum of six Council meetings (determined jointly with Council)
4. Actively participate in developing and implementing a membership growth strategy.
5. Reaches out and supports church members as needs and crises become known to include visitation for members who are sick or in distress
6. Attend major Church activities (i.e. yearly picnic, etc.).
7. Consideration for additional services and ministering to include installation of church officials, baptisms, funeral services, marriage, confirmation and other activities that comprise pastoral services and spiritual leadership.
8. Provide counseling to all Church Ministry activities.
