PART ONE: Multiple Choice

This part of the examination is a multiple choice test formatted in the manner of the S.A.T. It is comprised of 20 multiple choice vocabulary questions worth 40 points total. It should take you approximately 20 minutes to complete.

In this vocabulary section, you will be tested on keywords and literary terms we have studied this year and on all vocabulary lists given to date (List #1: ‘Tuesdays with Morrie’ words, List #2: Mood and Tone words, List #3: Flowers for Algernon words, List #4: Night words, List #5 Lord of the Flieswords, and List #6: Macbethwords):

PART TWO: Argument Essay

This part of the examination is a formal essay (formal academic voice) similar to the argument essay you will write on the Common Core exam. It is worth 60 points, and will be graded using a Rubric (1-6). This is a sample essay question:

Directions:Closely read each of the texts provided and write a source-based argument on the topic below. You should take time to outline and plan your argument prior to writing your essay.

Topic: Should it be legal to use corporal punishment for crimes committed in America?

Your Task: Carefully read each of the four texts provided. Then, using evidence from at least three of the texts, write a well-developed argument on whether it should be legal to use corporal punishment for crimes committed in America. Clearly establish your claim, distinguish your claim from alternate or opposing claims, and use specific, relevant, and sufficient evidence from at least three of the texts to develop your argument. Do not simply summarize each text provided.

Tips for Writing the Argument Essay

Essential Ingredients

  • HOOK YOUR READER: Your introduction should begin with a hook to grab the reader’s attention. You should then explain the topic in your own words. Follow up with your claim or thesis.
  • STATE YOUR CLAIM:Your claim is your positionon the topic and serves as your THESIS; this should appear in the introductory paragraph.
  • EVIDENCE FROM SOURCES: Use specific, relevant, and sufficient evidence from at least THREE TEXTS providedto develop your argument.
  • DISTINGUISH YOUR CLAIM from alternate or opposing claims (acknowledge the counterclaim). Then, refute it! (Give the refutation.)
  • Use the following strategies to write an effective, clear, well organized paper:

ABC Thesis:

-Although many believe A, it is clearly B because C.

-Although many say A, it is B because B+ and C…

  • Command of Language: Sentence construction, grammar, and word choice/diction. Spice it up by dropping some special sauce like superfluous, paradoxical, pernicious, or deleterious. Unleash your vocabulary!

More tips:

  • Use a formal style of writing (no contractions or colloquialisms or clichés!)
  • Use clear TOPIC SENTENCES in every body paragraph
  • Use present tense verbs and third person pronouns.
  • Write at least 5 paragraphs
  • Vary your sentence length to make it more engaging and interesting to read (sentence variety)
  • Use a persuasive tone!
