The Malt Cross is a Christian charity committed to expressing God’s love to the city of Nottingham through music, art, craft, a café bar and social outreach projects. It is run by a consortium of city churches in Nottingham.

Position Overview

Full time – 5 days a week – 37.5 hours a week

£30,000 per annum

Reporting to the Malt Cross Project Manager and Operations Director, and working in conjunction with the leadership team and the board of Trustees you will be responsible for the financial oversight, strategic business management and operational management of the Malt Cross and all its projects. You will have three direct reports, the Finance Administrator, the Fundraising Manager and the Caretaker.

Position Responsibilities to include the following

  • Responsibility for the overall financial management of the Malt Cross. This includes:
  • Overseeing the maintenance of accounting books and records sufficient to meet the requirements of the Companies Acts, Charity Commission, the Trustees of the Malt Cross.
  • Producing annual and monthly budgets and forecasts of cash flow and financial performance, and timely monthly financial reports against forecast.
  • Maintaining suitable internal financial controls.
  • Advising the Project Manager on all matters within this job description and especially on the financial management of the Malt Cross.
  • Devising strategic plans relating to each area of the Malt Cross for presentation to the Project Manager and to the Trustees for consideration and decision and thereafter to oversee their execution in conjunction with relevant parties.
  • Oversight of HR. This includes
  • Contributing to and implementing the company's personnel policies and maintaining them in such a way as to ensure that they are consistent with both statutory obligations and the ethos of the organization.
  • Providing HR advice on staff issues which might arise.
  • Ensuring the development and maintenance of the staff appraisal and review procedures.
  • Ensuring standard terms and conditions of employment for all staff are consistent with statutory obligations and the ethos of the Malt Cross.
  • Reviewing the overall pension provision for all staff of the Malt Cross and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Advising and assisting with the recruitment of staff.
  • Ensuring regular and appropriate training is available to staff.
  • Working with the project manager to ensure that we have the correct team in place to facilitate all of the work that is identified and where relevant ensure that we have the correct contractors in place to offer an integrated service for the Malt Cross.
  • Oversight of IT, laptops, computers, IT hardware, software, phones, printers and other infrastructure. You will be responsible for making all IT purchases in line with agreed budgets. This includes:
  • Ensuring that the Malt Cross has the appropriate technology to support the staff in a cost effective way.
  • Working with the relevant team leaders to develop and maintain the Malt Cross website.
  • Developing and maintaining the IT infrastructure.
  • Managing the upkeep of the property and the caretaker, and any other subcontractors needed and identified in the ten year management and maintenance plan to ensure the long term care of the building. This will require:
  • Ensuring that all of the Malt Cross building is operating at its optimum level and is appropriately maintained.
  • Ensuring the property is regularly inspected and appropriately maintained;
  • Developing solutions to changing property requirements in conjunction with the Trustees and external advisers.
  • Negotiating any leases on competitive terms as required and oversee them.
  • Managing, in conjunction with external advisers, all building projects, and to ensure these are completed within budget.
  • Developing and implementing solutions to shortages of accommodation.
  • Promoting the use of the buildings, creating terms for letting and managing all bookings.
  • You will manage all support services identified by the Project Manager and the board of Trustees.
  • You will act as the Company Secretary. This includes:
  • Servicing the proceedings of the Trustees and ensuring the servicing of its Sub- Committees or working groups.
  • Maintaining records of members and directors of the company and donors,
  • Ensuring compliance with statutory regulations, particularly in connection with health & safety, fire safety, employment, property use, food safety, PAYE, VAT, and data protection (ICO).
  • Arranging suitable insurance cover and the preparation of appropriate contingency plans for disaster recovery.
  • Oversight of housekeeping, catering and facilities management. This includes:
  • Ensuring the property and resources both owned, managed or utilised by the Malt Cross are well presented to all users.
  • Providing a framework for security of the company-owned property.
  • Maximising potential income from use of Malt Cross facilities.
  • Oversight of business development and marketing. This includes:
  • Working with the Project Manager and other colleagues to initiate a proactive approach to secure the commercial operations of the Malt Cross.
  • Developing a marketing strategy for the Malt Cross including branding.
  • Working with the managers of each area to maximise the potential for their operations.

  • A qualified as an accountant or have a business degree or similar qualification or experience.
