Unit 1 Review

Reading skills to review:

  • Author’s Purpose (they will be required to read a passage and identify the author’s purpose)
  • Persuade: the author tries to convince the reader to do something or agree with him or her
  • Inform: the author gives true factual information about a topic
  • Entertain: the author writes something for a reader’s enjoyment
  • Main Idea: what the text is mostly about

Details: statements that explain or prove the main idea

(they will be required to read a passage and identify the main idea and details)

  • Compare and Contrast: to tell or describe how things are alike and different
  • Suffixes: -ly, -ful, -al, -ive
  • Examples: friendly, pitiful, musical, inventive (students will have to identify the word with matching suffixes to these example words)

Grammar skills to review: (multiple choice, identify)

  • Types of Sentences:
  • Declarative: makes a statement
  • Interrogative: asks a question
  • Exclamatory: shows much emotion
  • Imperative: makes a command or request
  • Complete Subject: all the words in the subject

  • Simple Subject: the most important word in the simple subject
  • Example: Our awesome parents took us on an exciting vacation.
  • Complete Predicate: all the words in the predicate
  • Example: Our awesome parents took us on an exciting vacation.
  • Simple Predicate: the verb, the most important word in the complete predicate
  • Example: Our awesome parentstook us on an exciting vacation.
  • Simple Sentences: one complete thought that contains a subject and predicate

Word Analysis: (multiple choice)

  • Miss: an unmarried female; to remember with sadness
  • outline: give a summary of something; the shape of something
  • goods: products made by a company

Open-Ended Questions: There will be two open ended questions based on the passages on the test. Students will be required to restate the question, answer all parts of the question completely, and provide support and/or evidence for their response. Students should also include a closing sentence.
