Transportation in AtlanticCounty

According to the last report, trains in AtlanticCounty serve the purpose of freight carrying. There are only regional (no local) bus routes in the area, between Cumberland and AtlanticCounties. Cars are the main mode of transportation. The mock PRT network we designed sought to provide public transport in such a way that over 90% of both productions and attractions were located within a quarter mile of the stations.

MOCK PRT SYSTEM

There are 82 schools and over 1500 businesses, restaurants and other leisure in GloucesterCounty. The focus for the PRT Network was attractions density, placing stations strategically so that most work areas, restaurants and attractions were readily accessible. The problem with this lay in the sparseness of households, where it was impossible to have more than 80% within a quarter mile of any station. The best system, therefore, would be a multi-modal PRT, which might require all houses within a mile or two mile radius (instead of quarter mile) to drive to the station, then take the PRT to work. We were able to access almost 95% of attractions, with emphasis on the Atlantic City area. The mock PRT system was built with the existing stations in mind, although they were not geocoded and placed on the map. We attempted to place at most 6 station stops to final destination in denser areas and four stops in sparser areas, since it was for much longer lengths of guideway. The average ratio of stations to interchanges was 5.7 to 1.

With 543 nodes (stations and interchanges)attempting to supply a total of 252,552 productions and 524,791 attractions, this PRT system yielded success rates of 79.72% for productions and 94.08% for attractions. The calculations below show clearly that for this county, a full PRT system is not yet a viable option since it requires considerable expense to finance relatively few trips. However, the possibility of a multi-modal PRT (car to central stations) should be not yet be completely discounted; perhaps more attention and consideration should be given to this in future projects.

Cost of PRT

Cost per station = $2m, Number of stations = 462

Total cost of stations = $924m

Cost per mile of guideway = $5m, length of guideway = 654.0 km = 406.353miles

Total cost of guideway = $2032m

Cost per vehicle = $100,000 at 1.5% of the fleet driving cars with a 90% or more covered PRT network

Total cost of vehicles = 100K*0.015*271,620 = $407m

Expense per person = Total cost/population = $3363m/272K = $12364

Number of trips per person per day = 4

Cost per trip per person to pay for the system over a year = $12364/(4*365) = $8.47
