Oxford’s Timothy Williamsonto Deliver the 2018–2019Sanders Lecture in Denver, Colorado
NEWARK, Del. — Dec. 6, 2017 — The American Philosophical Association is pleased to announce thatProfessor Timothy Williamson (New College, Oxford)will deliverthe 2018–2019Sanders Lecture at the2019 Central Division meeting in Denver, CO.
The Sanders Lecture was established in 2013 to honor a distinguished scholar in philosophy of mind, metaphysics, or epistemology who engages the analytic tradition. It is generously funded by the Marc Sanders Foundation. Thelecture, which includes a $3,500 monetary awardplus travel costs not to exceed $1,500, is offered every year at an APA divisional meeting on a rotating basis.
The chair of the selection committee said, “Timothy Williamson’s research has been immensely influential across a broad range of areas of philosophy: epistemology, metaphysics, logic, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of language. His most famous work has cut against dominant scholarly trends, opening up new avenues of inquiry. He is especially well known for his theory of vagueness—he maintains that vague concepts have sharp but unknowable boundaries—and his revolutionary ‘knowledge-first’ approach in epistemology.”
Timothy Williamsonearned his doctorate in philosophy at the University of Oxford. He is currently the Wykeham Professor of Logic at the University of Oxford, and the A. Whitney Griswold Visiting Professor of Philosophy at Yale University.He has held visiting appointments at MIT, Princeton, and Michigan, and is an Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
