MUSIC HISTORY (Overview)
Classical music is the art music produced in, or rooted in, the traditions of Western liturgical and secular music, encompassing a broad period from roughly the 11th century to present times. The central norms of this tradition became codified between 1550 and 1900, which is known as the common practice period.
The term "classical music" did not appear until the early 19th century, in an attempt to "canonize" the period from Johann Sebastian Bach to Beethoven as a golden age.
The major time divisions of classical music are the early music period, which includes Medieval (476–1400) and Renaissance (1400–1600), the Common practice period, which includes the Baroque (1600–1750), Classical (1730–1820) and Romantic (1815–1910) periods, and the modern and contemporary period, which includes 20th century classical (1900–2000) and contemporary classical (1975–current).
PIANO TECHNIQUE (Primary technical studies: The
The Virtuoso Pianist (Le Piano virtuose) by Charles-Louis Hanon, is a compilation of sixty exercises meant to train the pianist in speed, precision, agility, and strength of all of the fingers and flexibility in the wrists. First published in Boulogne, in 1873, The Virtuoso Pianist is Hanon's most well-known work, and is still widely used by piano instructors and pupils.
