AVP Britain Fundraiser
Outline of terms and conditions
Responsible to: Director.
Responsible for: Ensuring that our annual income target is met.
Salary: £26,000 (pro rata) plus 5% pension to be paid into the pension fund of the post-holder’s choice. Includes London weighting.
Leave entitlement: 25 days per year (pro rata) and bank holidays (pro rata), plus ordinary working days between Christmas and New Year
Hours: 21 hours per week excluding breaks (0.6 full-time staff equivalent)
Location: London and other locations by arrangement; some evening and weekend work is required.
Contract: 12 months in the first instance, renewable subject to funding and a three-month probationary period.
Outline
The Alternatives to Violence Project is a small, busy community organisation supporting people to handle conflict without violence by offering a programme of workshops and distance-learning in communities and prisons across Britain. We work mainly with people affected by domestic violence (including perpetrators), prisoners and ex-offenders, and people whose mental health has been affected by violence. All our workshops are delivered by trained volunteers, supportedby a small staff.
This is a new post. In the last three years, AVP has been growing and raising the standard of our work. We are now at an exciting point in our development as we aim to expand our workshop programme and develop its effectiveness. As our Fundraiser, you will lead the organisation’s fundraising effort, working closely with the Director and other key staff and volunteers to ensure that this programme of work can flourish and benefit those who need it most.
Main areas of Responsibility
Grant-making trusts, foundations and major donors
To lead and further develop a programme of fundraising applications to grant-making trusts, foundations and major donors, working closely with the Director. This includes:
- Researching new sources of grants.
- Preparing grant applications to a high standard.
- Keeping funders informed and fostering long-term relationships.
- Preparing reports to funders.
- Timetabling and coordinating grant applications according to our annual financial cycle.
- Creating and renewing a long-term fundraising strategy and plan, working closely with the Director.
- Support AVP’s regional offices to raise funds from local grant-making trusts and community foundations.
Individual donations, standing orders and fundraising events
To increase income from donations and events. This includes:
- Supporting AVP volunteers and others to participate in sponsored events and other grassroots fundraising initiatives.
- Encouraging individuals within and beyond the organisation to make regular donations.
- Seeking donations and gifts-in-kind from local businesses.
- Producing fundraising materials as needed.
Other
- To carry out the fundraising programme with regard to the values of AVP as a nonviolence organisation (a statement of values is available).
- To ensure that all fundraising activity is carried out in a manner that meets the Charity Commission’s requirements and complies with relevant legislation
- To take responsibility for the fundraising pages of the website.
- To work closely with the Administrative and Fundraising Assistant to ensure excellent fundraising records are kept, and that donors are thanked and feel valued.
- To prepare reports to the Director and/or Trustees on progress made against the fundraising strategy and plan.
- To support the national staff team with sundry tasks on occasion.

Experience of work in the voluntary or social enterprise sector. / *
Experience of servicing and working to committees. / *
Knowledge
Education to ‘A’ Level with good grades (A*-C). / *
Education to degree level or equivalent. / *
Knowledge of grant-making trusts and their grant-making processes. / *
Familiarity with AVP or other conflict-handling approaches / Knowledge of community work / Knowledge of the criminal justice system. / *
