Main Purpose of Job

To coordinate and deliverOut of the Blue, a programme of arts clubs for children in five areas of the city, with linked family activities, delivered with support from learning disabled volunteers. The Artist Facilitator will be responsible for developing content with input from volunteers and a Family Forum and for ensuring that content is tangibly linked to and inspired by the artistic programme at the Bluecoat. The Facilitator will also develop and support a small learning network of arts organisations who work with learning disabled people in similar ways. S/he will also develop and regularly update a blog with input from participants and volunteers (training will be given for this if required).

Budget Responsibility

You will take responsibility for the materials and refreshments budgets for Out of the Blue in liaison with the Head of Participation.

Hours of Duty

27 hours (usually worked over 5 days, Monday to Friday, plus four Sundays each year)

Salary

£20,000 pro rata

Holidays

30 days annually (including 8 bank holidays).

N.B. Holidays must be taken during periods when activities are not running.

Start date: January 2014 for a fixed term of 3 years

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. To liaise with partners in schools and other local organisations to recruit up to 75 children aged 6 – 9 years old with an active interest in art from five targeted areas of the city to be the initial members of the Out of the Blue project.
  1. To devise and lead the delivery of a programme of arts activities linked to the contemporary programme at the Bluecoat, for this constituent group and their families including:
  • A term-time art club taking place after school for one session a week in each of five venues
  • Holiday activities taking place at the Bluecoat for 20-25 days per year (devised and delivered in partnership with Blue Room members, the Blue Room Facilitator and Assistant)
  • Family afternoons talking place at the Bluecoat for four afternoons per year (devised and delivered with supportfrom Family Forum members and the core Participation team at the Bluecoat).
  1. To train and support a team of 10 learning disabled artists from the Blue Room project to volunteer in the delivery of all three strands of activity described in 2.
  1. To manage two Creative Apprentices in their support of the delivery of the programme for 17.5 hour each week.
  1. To communicate regularly and clearly with parents/carers about the activities so their awareness is maintained, in particular with reference to the family sessions which they can attend.
  1. To recruit members for a Family Forum, plan and support quarterly meetings and establish appropriate feedback mechanisms to the Head of Participation.
  1. To take a lead on health and safety and safeguarding, ensuring that systems are in place and protocols are observed to promote a consistently safe approach to working with children and vulnerable adults.
  1. To coordinate transport arrangements, room bookings and staffing for activities taking place at the Bluecoat.
  1. To lead the delivery team to assist children and families in the development ofcreative skills and confidence in contemporary arts environments through demonstration, advice and supported practice.
  1. To liaise with Liverpool City Council regarding the use of their venues for the term-time art clubs and to ensure that workshop spaces are set up with appropriate furniture, equipment and materials for activity sessions.
  1. To ensure the spaces are left tidy and clean after each session and that equipment is put away and artwork is safely stored.
  1. To source materials for specific projects and manage a budget for this purpose.
  1. To support the documentation process through photos and help keep an organised archive backed up with consent forms.
  1. To complete a session record for each day as part of the monitoring and evaluation process and to contribute to regular reports to the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and other funders.
  1. To participate in the development and delivery of an evaluation approach for this programme.
  1. To supportan annual artist-in-residence project through:
  1. Direct support of the artist in creative sessions with children and learning disabled adults during residency periods
  2. Facilitation of regular communication between children and the artist during the periods between visits
  3. Facilitation of sessions with children and learning disabled adults related to the residency project in between the artist’s visits
  1. To work with other members of the participation team to contribute to the planning and installation of displays and exhibitions of work and of performances and other sharing.
  1. To support the development of a small network of arts organisations working through similar approaches with learning disabled people in the arts. To work with the Head of Participation to arrange two network meetings each year for this group and coordinate all necessary arrangements.
  1. To carry out all duties with full regard to the Bluecoat’s policies.
  1. To undertake any additional duties reasonably commensurate with the level of this post.
