Overview of directorate

The Communications and Engagement directorate delivers communications of the highest quality to support Breast Cancer Now’s strategy for engagement. The Communications department includes PR and Celebrity, Brand, Communications, Public Health and Information and Digital, led by the Director of Communications.

The Public Health and Information team supports patients and the public to play a full role in their own treatment and care, diagnosing cancer earlier and managing their own risk of getting breast cancer. This is through provision of high quality and innovative information and campaigns on the treatment, care and quality of services and steps the public can take to prevent, and support the early diagnosis of, breast cancer.

Purpose of the role

  • To Increase the reach of and engagement in Breast Cancer Now’s health information by developing implementing and managing marketing plans.
  • Manage the development of existing and new health information, which supports behaviour change and aims to empower patients and the public to play a full role in living a healthy lifestyle, managing their own treatment and care and diagnosing cancer earlier.

Key accountabilities

  • Manage innovative ways of producing and marketing Breast Cancer Now’s health information to target audiences, especially through the best use of technology, ensuring the impact and benefits to the charity are maximised.
  • Manage the development and implementation of breast cancer wellbeing initiatives, often working in partnership with other organisations.
  • To identify new opportunities and demonstrate innovative approaches to communicating with target audiences, delivering enquiries from multiple market sectors.
  • Manage and deliver marketing plans for all Breast Cancer Now’s health products including the production of any collateral and other tools that are required.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring that Breast Cancer Now’s information production maintains accreditation through the Information Standard scheme.
  • Ensure differences in healthcare systems across the four nations are accounted for in all health information products.
  • Show efficient use of all budgets, demonstrating best value for money.
  • Set targets and evaluate all heath campaigns.

General responsibilities

  • Working with the Digital Engagement Manager, oversee the digitalisation of Breast Cancer Now’s health information, maximising opportunities to increase reach.
  • Identify and advise on opportunities for collaboration on information initiatives, including with other charitable organisations and relevant national bodies.
  • Be an ambassador for Breast Cancer Now at events, supporting the delivery of Breast Cancer Now’s vision and ensuring that Breast Cancer Now’s profile and reputation are enhanced.
  • Support the development of proposals to attract external funding for Breast Cancer Now’s public health and information work, in collaboration with colleagues in Engagement and Income Generation.
  • Manage the health information team.
  • Support the Health Information Officers to provide support and advice across the organisation on communicating key messages around breast cancer and health promotion, providing training where necessary.
  • Support the Head of Public Health and Information in planning and budgeting processes.
  • Any other duties as directed by and agreed with line manager.

Person Specification

Experience

We would like you to have the following experience:

  • In a relevant discipline to degree level (preferably in a health subject) or other equivalent experience
  • Leading, managing and evaluating specific projects to tight deadlines
  • Of delivering information and campaigns to deliver or support behaviour change
  • Of working effectively, and on a cross-functional basis, at meetings and events with internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience of service marketing, including delivering strategic marketing plans and experience of design, print and production and e-marketing
  • Managing health information production processes maintaining compliance with NHS England’s Information Standard Scheme
  • Of managing and developing a team

Skills

We would like you to be able to:

  • Understand a range of marketing tools and techniques
  • Develop innovative ways of communicating complex health information into language suitable for a lay audience, both written and verbal
  • Understand and apply principles of behaviour change research to communications and activities
  • Good writing skills, including excellent attention to detail, grammar and spelling
  • Deal with a wide range of people from the general public through to senior scientists and clinicians
