SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (YEAR A pages 314, 452 & 495)

Entrance Proclaim a joyful sound and let it be heard; proclaim to the ends of the Antiphon earth: The Lord has freed his people, alleluia.

1st Reading(Acts of the Apostles 8:5-8, 14-17) Philip and other leaders of the Christian movement were forced to flee Jerusalem because of persecution. He took the Gospel to Samaria where, like Jesus, he gave the message by words, signs and many acts of healing. Peter and John visited Samaria and confirmed Philip’s work which helped to resolve the enmity between Jews and Samaritans by their receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit.

ResponseCry out with joy to God all the earth.

2nd Reading(1st Letter to St. Peter 3:15-18) Peter asks Christians to be clear about what they stand for. They must be prepared to suffer for their beliefs if in a hostile environment. They must answer questions with courtesy and respect even from those who slander them. Christ, though innocent, died for the guilty so it is better to suffer by doing right rather than by doing wrong.

AcclamationAlleluia, alleluia!

Jesus said: “If anyone loves me he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we shall come to him.”

Alleluia!

Gospel (John 14:14-21) After his resurrection Jesus asked his disciples to keep His commandments because His love is like that of a loving parent. He is preparing them for His ascension but tells them He will not leave them orphaned, He will send them the Spirit of Truth. We should attempt to keep His commandments because our obedience is centred on the love of Jesus who is God’s love made visible.

ChildrenJesus tells his friends he will not leave them alone. He promises to send his Holy Spirit to be with them always. Anyone who loves God will keep Jesus’ commands. God will be with them and love them.

CommunionIf you love me, keep my commandments, says the Lord, and I will ask Antiphon the Father and he will send you another Paraclete, to abide with you for ever, alleluia.
