Guidelines for the reception of communion

For Catholics of Western or Eastern rites:

As Catholics we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion.

The Church encourages us to receive Communion devoutly and frequently.

For a proper disposition of soul to receive communion, participants should not be conscious of having committed a grave and unforgiven sin, and should normally have fasted for at least one hour.

A person conscious of being in a state of grave sin may not receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession and absolution, except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the communicant must make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible. (CIC 916)

For other fellow Christians:

We welcome you as our brothers and sisters to this celebration of the Eucharist.

We pray that our common baptism and the working of the Holy Spirit will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us.

We pray that these divisions will lessen and finally disappear in keeping with Christ’s prayer for us ‘that they all may be one’ (Jhn 17.21)

However, members of churches which are not in full union with the Catholic church are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion, because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of a oneness of faith, life, and worship.

Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by non-Catholic Christians requires permission according to the direction of the diocesan bishop, the provisions of canon law (CIC 844 §4), and the discipline of the communicant’s own church.

According to Roman Catholic discipline, the Code of Canon law (CIC 844 §3) does not object to the reception of Holy Communion by Christians of the Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Polish National Catholic Church.

For non-Christians:

We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ.

While we cannot admit you to Holy Communion, we ask you to offer prayers and thoughts of good will for the peace and unity of mankind.

Notes on the hymns and music for this service

The Russian Children’s and Youth Choir Sophia from the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk sang at Boston College during the bride’s senior year and has happened this weekend to be en route from Virginia to New York. Sara, who endured the study of Russian and of Church Slavonic among other horrors, understandably could not resist the opportunity of having them present to enrich this joyful occasion and bring their special blessing of youthful song and a soulful tradition.

Choir Sophia, directed by Olga Roussakova, has, since 1992, also served as a cathedral choir for Archbishop Antony of Krasnoyarsk and Yenisei, who, with his chaplain, Father Nikolai, is also accompanying the choir on their month-long concert tour of the Eastern United States.
