ORCA PROCEDURES

SHADE SETUP / PARTS INVENTORY

Orca shade tents are erected for home meets. The evening before the home meet, the setup crew will put together pieces to construct 4 shades of the same dimensions (without legs). The morning of the meet, the legs are added, and three with white tarps are to be placed together behind the starting blocks and 1 with the blue tarp is to be placed adjacent to lane 1 for the computer desk and announcers.

Each shade/canopy consists of multiple unions, metal tubing, a nylon tarp, shock cords and buckets, described below:

Ø  Unions: Corner (3-way) – 6 pieces

Ø  Unions: Side/peak (4-way) – 6 pieces

Ø  Tubing Long: 9 pieces

Ø  Tubing Short: 8 pieces for “tops” (‘Night Before’ crew)

Ø  Tubing Short: 8 pieces for “legs” (‘Morning’ crew)

Ø  Tarp – 1 per shade (Computer desk requires 1 Large blue tarp for top, 2 white tarps for long and short sides, and 1 small blue tarp to cover the top triangle on sunny side.

Ø  Shock cord/bungees: 10 orange ball type

Ø  Shock cord/bungees: 12 black ball type

Ø  Shock cord/bungees: 4 long hook-end type per tent , or 12 total for three connected structures (‘Morning’ crew)

Ø  Buckets: 4 per tent (8 for 3 contiguous tents tents – 12 for all 4 tents)

Installation

UNIONS – Used to connect tubing, two types, 3-way and 4-way.

1.  Each shade/canopy requires six (6) 3-way unions placed at the vertices of the implied “triangles”, 3 at either end of the shade.

2.  Each shade/canopy requires six (6) 4-way unions placed at the vertices of the two interior implied “triangles”.

TUBING – Sleeves into unions; two lengths, Short and Long.

3.  Each shade/canopy requires nine (9) long tubes, 3 connected together form each of the sides and peak of the shade.

4.  Each shade/canopy requires sixteen (16) short tubes, eight (8) connecting together the base and peak tubes to form the 45° slope of the shade. The remaining eight (8) are to be connected to the downward unions as “legs” by the morning setup crew.

SHADE / TARP – Run length of tarp down length of frame. Two colors white and blue: Three (3) white tarps for starting block / timer area shades; Computer desk requires 1 Large blue tarp for top, 2 white tarps for long and short sides, and 1 small blue tarp to cover the top triangle on sunny side (see insert).

SHOCK CORD / BUNGEEs – Used to secure tarp to frame and frame to buckets. Three main types: Orange ball type, Black ball type & long hook-end type.

5.  Each shade/canopy requires ten (10) orange ball type bungees; connecting grommets of tarp to peak and sloped tubing at either end of the shade. Connecting every other grommet is sufficient to conserve bungees.

6.  Each shade/canopy requires twelve (12) black ball type bungees; connecting grommets of tarp to bottom (side) tubing at either side of the shade. Again, connect at every other grommet.

7.  For morning setup crew only: Each shade/canopy requires twelve (12) long hook-end type bungees; connecting frame to buckets weighted with water to anchor the structure.

LEGS – Use short tubing.

For morning setup crew only: Each shade/canopy requires the remaining eight (8) short tubes for legs, connected to the downward union.

BUCKETS – Used for stabilization.

For morning setup crew only: Each shade/canopy requires a weighted bucket for each leg tube, secured to frame by long hook-end bungee. Where two shade frames are joined together, one bucket serves two “legs”. Use 4 per tent (8 for 3 contiguous tents – 12 for all 4 tents).
