OPITO Piper Alpha Memorial MSc Safety Scholarships

Summary

OPITO are offering two scholarships of £6,000each towards the students’ maintenance costs. In addition, the scholarship recipient obtaining the highest mark in their dissertation at the end of their studies will receive a further £500.

The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit, demonstration of particular personal characteristics and financial need.

Priority will be given to applicants not already in receipt of a scholarship for their postgraduate studies. Students may not hold more than one corporate funded scholarship at any one time.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The scholarships are open to applicants holding an offer of admission forone of the following campus-based, one year, full-time degree programmes starting in September 2018: MSc Safety and Reliability Engineering for Oil and Gas;MSc Safety and Reliability Engineering or MSc Process Safety. The scholarships are not open to applicants wishing to study the programmesonline or on a part-time basis.
  • Applicants must be classified by the University as Home/EU, RUK or Overseasfor tuition fee purposes.
  • The scholars’ dissertations must address the issue of ‘safety in the oil and gas industry’.

Guidelines for Applicants

Academic merit will be judged on previous years’ academic performance which should be evidenced by a transcript.

In respect of personal characteristics, applicants should be able to show, through submission of a personal statement, that they:

  • Are enthusiastic,highly motivated and determined to succeed academically and professionally
  • Have a strong commitment to self-development and take a pro-active and committed approach to their education.
  • Possess good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Have an awareness of, and interest in, safety and issues affecting and impacting on safety in the oil and gas industry.

Financial need will also be considered as part of the award criteria. Please provide details of your financial circumstances for consideration. This can be included in your personal statement.

General Terms and Conditions

The scholarship will be subject to the scholarship recipient making satisfactory progress in their degree. The scholarship will lapse if the scholar ceases to study an eligible degree programme, does not complete a dissertation linked to safety in the oil and gas industry,or leaves the University of Aberdeen. The scholarship can only be held by students of the University – they cannot be transferred to another institution.

Events and Reports

Scholarship recipients are expected to attend the annual Corporate Scholars’ Reception and any other events related to the Scholarships Programme. They will also be required to write a short annual report at the end of the academic year which is to be submitted to the University of Aberdeen Development Trust who will forward it to the donor. The Development Trust will provide a standard template for the report. Scholars must also agree that the full content of their dissertation can be openly shared with the oil and gas industry without prejudice or constraint for the benefit of safety improvement.

Selection Process

A scholarship panel comprising a nominated course leader from the School of Engineering, an individual from the Development Trust and a representative from OPITO will consider the applications, shortlist the candidates and make the awards.

The outcome of scholarship applications will be communicated by email.

Personal Statement:Please upload a personal statement. In no less than 250 words; making reference to your academic achievements, motivation for the MSc programme,how you demonstrate the required personal characteristics and any relevant work experience, please give reasons why you believe you should be considered for an award. Please also advise how you intend to fund your postgraduate studies and provide details of your financial circumstances. The maximum file size for the personal statement is 1MB.
