Gloria Kemp Student Financial Services Update
· Planning mass exits for all colleges on how to manage student loans after graduation
§ Currently working with colleges to schedule this
§ Does not replace required mandatory exit on Mapping your Future-this is if you are wanting extra help
· April is Financial Literacy Month
· 2nd issue of “The Cure” financial newsletter will come out this month
· Schedule one-on-one financial counseling session with Teresa Boothe
Sarah Crawley Blackboard Update
· If you have any questions that you would like to be updated on, please e-mail me at
Mary Ryan Library Renovations
· Security and panic buttons have been placed in new study room in the left-hand far corner. As soon as furniture moved in, it will be open as a study area.
· Currently re-carpeting front entrance.
· Per student request, we have opened the back door at the Active Learning Center 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after meeting. We encourage you to use it and it cuts down on noise.
· Two other things to cut down on noise in progress
§ Renovate 35 year old elevator so it will be out of commission this summer and will hopefully be finished by August 1st.
§ Close suspended walkway where people are waiting on elevator
· Appreciate patience during all of this. We have made noise, but it will be worth it.
· Encourage all students to report suspicious activity to library employees AND police. Make sure library staff knows that you called police and give them your name and contact information. If police have to follow up, they can get more details from you and staff.
· Student: Can we get an e-mail address to immediately send suspicious activity to since we are all at computers?
§ Will look into it
· Student: Can we get microphones on every table because it’s very inconvenient during Team Based Learning and it takes a lot of time to get to the microphone?
§ We looked into this during implementation and it costs way too much money, but maybe we could get more handheld microphones. Will also look into this.
Mark Kenneday Student Parking Fee
· Requesting for student parking fee from all students. We have never charged parking fee, but can’t find another university that doesn’t charge one.
§ $78 fee each semester and $38 for summer.
§ Must put parking money into single account that is self-sufficient.
§ This will be a flat fee for every student.
· Have a longstanding agreement with War Memorial for parking that includes Dept. of Health, AR state hospital, and us. Last year signage went up with Dept of Health signs; they thought UAMS was using too much space.
· At the time, we started construction on the new hospital and new residence hall; we had to relocate a lot of student parking and other parking facilities and had started moving everyone further west.
· UAMS added a $300,000 shuttle and had people parking everywhere that had to be picked up. We were then asked to expand shuttle services and we did. We were then asked to put in express shuttle that added $80,000 and we did.
· Today, we have ample parking for everyone.
· Last year, we got approval to add parking at Ray Winder that added 475 spots.
· In spring of this year, we will be closing Hendricks Hall parking and will begin building for IT and Finance. This will push us into relocating student parking to Ray Winder.
· Student: Will student fee apply to NW students?
§ Under advisement, but it is being considered. Needs and problems are similar to Little Rock. Parking deck needs significant repair
· Students can still park in War Memorial (not Arkansas Dept. of Health spots) or Ray Winder.
· Total parking budget is $4 million; this fee will collect around $336,000.
· Has already been approved, but we will submit the final request to the Board.
· All of details will be discussed in the near future.
Leslie Hitt Northwest Update
· Date set for creative services to come to NW campus to take cap and gown photos for rising senior students on Friday March 29th.
· We have a crosswalk at a spot that the people of Fayetteville aren’t used to seeing a crosswalk. We had flashing lights, but they finally installed pedestrian marker in the middle that has drastically helped with traffic slowing down at the crosswalk. Will send thank you note to the city.
· Community service is inter-professional here. We are setting up dates at the Fayetteville Free Clinic for volunteering on Thursday evenings.
· Set up screenings with the Marshallese community and screened about 100 last year. We will try to do this every semester. In April, we will be going to their churches again.
· Collaborating with Diabetes Association Board to provide screenings
Emily Reichard 12th Street Committee
· Clinton School of Public Service has a focus group whose goal is to determine what students know about the center and how they view it. They will be presenting everything they have found in May.
· Center is offering physicals on February 11th and 25th. COM volunteer response was pretty big, so we appreciate that.
· Graduate school has found a role for participating and it will mostly be education based. On Feb 25th, they will provide a seminar on cardiovascular health.
· Community has been sent a calendar of all events and seems really receptive.
Nakia Dedner Student Health Insurance/Clinic Committee
· Committee met with Academic Health Plans representative. Changes will take place in 2014, so we will focus on renewal coming up and work on things that are supposed to happen in 2013.
· Lifetime maximum benefit will increase for 250,000 to 500,000. Any person on the policy will incur a 4-5% tax increase.
· If you are interested in detailed information, the notes are available from the meeting.
· The committee will meet in February or early March and students will be invited to come in and discuss.
Chris Finlay The Arts of UAMS
· Library has small exhibition space on the 2nd floor. We want to incorporate a student art exhibit. It was been a couple years since students placed art in the exhibit.
· We are trying to get in touch with other colleges to find artists who may want to be included.
· E-mail Chris Finlay at if interested.
Colby Elrod Spring Event
· ASG applications are out. Officer elections will take place in March. Remember, if you are running for president or vice-president, you must have served as a representative for at least one year.
· Planning event to Travelers game where we will provide food and a ticket to the game. One guest per person will be more than likely allowed.
· Will follow up with further details.
Mike Anders Sim Wars
Sherry Johnson
· Simulation center is coordinating this inter-professional event on Thursday, May 2nd 1030 -1230.
· Cases will be simulated and will be over advanced cardiac life support. Dilemmas will have to be solved and quick decisions will have to be made, but we are hoping this will be really fun.
· Ask audience to vote based on core competencies.
· Cash prizes for winner and runner up.
· Just for seniors and will accept four teams (NW will be one team)
· Students will receive e-mail and you will have a contact person from your college to talk with if you are interested in competing.
