East Dulwich Coffee and Cinema Club Volunteer Role Description

Introduction

Opening Doors London (ODL) is the biggest project providing information and support services with and for Older Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans* and Queer + (LGBTQ+) people in the UK. Established in 2008 ODL now operates across all of London. We offer support through social groups and activities, special events and befriending services. We operate an extensive volunteer service, and work with strategic partners to promote and support our service. Our mission is to combat and overcome loneliness and isolation in older LGBTQ+ communities in London and beyond.

The ODL Cinema, Chats & Coffee Club runs at East Dulwich Picture House from 11.00 second Thursday of each month

Role Outline:

  • This is a support role working as part of a team to ensure the smooth running of each event. Volunteers work as a team to set up the event, communicate with venue staff, research films and ensure that the venue is accessible.
  • Volunteers should also focus on making sure all members enjoy the event and when necessary are gently encouraged to socialise with other members.
  • Volunteers are required to attend any relevant training and two volunteer forums annually
  • Volunteers should be committed to and competent in member, volunteer and organisation confidentiality, and mindful of Information Governance policy.

Duties:

  • Helping set up the room
  • Meeting and greeting members. Especially welcoming new members, introducing them to other people and ensuring they feel welcome and helping them to integrate.
  • Sitting with the members and being part of the social group, joining the conversation and ensuring new members feel comfortable.
  • Informing members about the film being screened and the cost and discount program
  • Communicating with staff at the venue and keeping our relationship with the venue good and mutually beneficial
  • Helping clear away at the end of the event

Personal qualities most suited to the role:

  • Volunteers will ideally be sociable people who are able to encourage good group dynamics and be mindful of the social needs of sometimes vulnerable individual members
  • Good cultural sensitivity to the intersectional histories, needs and complexities of Older LGBTQ+ communities in the UK
  • Ability to volunteer using own initiative as required
  • Well organised and be able to prioritise tasks
  • Mindful and respectful of the needs and rights of minoritised people and communities in line with the Equality Act 2010
  • Requirement to undertake induction training and follow guidelines and policies of Opening Doors London

Hours of Volunteering

  • Once a month on the 2nd Thursday at 11.00am for the social and then optional discounted film screening. Possible additional one hour a month for planning.

  • Travel and other approved expenses are reimbursed to volunteers.

  • Induction to ODL Volunteer Procedures and follow up training as required
