8a. PRESENT FIELD OF RESEARCH AND PROJECT FUNDING

Research

I am currently Project Leader of The Myelin Group at the Dept. of Anatomy, University of Oulu. The research program of The Myelin Group (see web site at: aims to contribute to our understanding of myelin formation, maintenance and disease through the identification and elucidation of the roles of functional relationships between myelin components and their ligands, on the one hand, and through the identification and analysis of gene expression networks involved in the terminal differentiation of myelinating glial cells, on the other hand. This project thus aims to expand our knowledge of molecular and cellular aspects of myelin formation and maintenance in the nervous system, providing the basis for gaining further insight into the mechanisms involved in the development of human demyelinating diseases. Our research in the first domain (Protein-ligand interactions) is primarily, but not exclusively, focused on MAG, which is one of the few myelin-specific proteins to be expressed in both the CNS and the PNS. The approaches employed include molecular and cell biology, protein chemistry and structural biochemistry. Our research in the second domain (Gene and protein expression networks) exploits our myelinating co-culture model, the availability of numerous, well-defined mouse myelin mutants, as well as cDNA microarray technology, functional proteomics and systems biology, to identify and analyse the differentiation-dependent expression of myelin component functional networks. This second research domain is performed as a cooperative venture with the Myelination & Myelin Disease Consortium (MMDC), of which I am the Coordinator. In collaboration with the Bioworld Oulu Project, Bioforum Oulu and Medipolis GMP (Oulu), I am also establishing a Cell Banking service for the large-scale production and maintenance of Primary Glial Cell Banks in Oulu.

Funding: 1995-2003
