Dr. Andy Moore’s mother, Lottie Moore, died last week at the age of 98. Rachel and Andy have gone to Mississippi for the services and will be returning to Waco at the end of this week.

"Dreams Unborn," a short story written by senior professional writing major Michael Bracken, was named as one of the best mystery stories of 2004 in the recently published anthology The Best American Mystery Stories 2005, edited by Joyce Carol Oates (Otto Penzler, series editor), and published by Houghton Mifflin Company. "Dreams Unborn" was first published in Small Crimes, an anthology of mystery short stories published by Betancourt & Co.

Meredith Reynolds presented a paper entitled "'Truly...hit were shame...to sey hym ony dysworshyp': Malory's Gareth as Instructional Example" at the Southeastern Medieval Association conference in Daytona Beach, Florida on September 30th.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Information has been received regarding the MFA in Creative Writing program at Bowling GreenStateUniversity. Interested applicants are required to submit a portfolio of writing consisting of 20-30 pages for both fiction and poetry, three letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and a sample of critical writing. Information has been received from the English Department at MichiganStateUniversity regarding a search for at least three tenured/tenure track professors. CONFERENCES – CALLS FOR PAPERS

Information has been received on the 30th Annual Boston University Conference on Language Development taking place November 4-6, 2005. Keynote address will be given by Janet Walker of the University of British Columbia. Plenary address will be given by Harald Clahsen of the University of Essex. Information has been received regarding a call for papers from the Southeastern Conference on Christianity and Literature at AndersonCollege in Anderson, South Carolina taking place April 6-8, 2006. The general topic for papers is “Christian witness in a world of clashing cultures.” Papers should not exceed a reading time of 15-20 minutes (8-10 typed pages). Information has been received regarding the Mississippi Review Prize contest, which was previously mentioned in the September 9, 2005 edition of Harpings. Information has been received from the Festival of Faith and Writing concerning a call for papers due April 20-22, 2006. Submissions should be 15-20 minutes in length (no abstracts) that address the themes or writers of the Festival. Papers must be received by December 1, 2005. Information has been received from the Martin Museum of Art regarding two upcoming conferences:TALMUD and the Art of Ben-Zion and Marc Chagall will be taking place October 21-November 16, 2005 with an opening reception from 6-8 pm on Thursday, October 27, 2005; Collector’s Items: Biblical Art and Private Devotion will be taking place October 25-November 19, 2005 and again November 29-December 3, 2005. The 21st Annual National Undergraduate Literature Conference has sent information about its upcoming call for papers. Submission deadline is January 27, 2006, and the submission categories are Research (American Literature, British Literature, and World Literature)and Creative Works (Essays, Fiction, Poetry, and Creative works in Spanish). Submissions should not exceed 15 minutes in length; there is a three-poem minimum unless they exceed 15 minutes in reading length. For more information, please see flier on file in CS 106.

Echoes of the Aeolian Harp

Dr. Linda K. Walker has received notice from the Board of Advisors that she has been selected as an Outstanding Young Woman of America for 1982 in recognition of outstanding ability, accomplishments, and service to the community. Dr. Walker’s biographical data will be published in the 1982 edition of the Outstanding Young Women of America.
