Observations by Dr Lyndon Bouah

My recent article elicited a number of emails from readers. I thank you profusely for these emails which I appreciate greatly. Connie Van Der Walt kindly supplied me with their final standings following their playoffs which I attach hereto. So well done to all the champions.

I understand from some of the attendees at the event that spectators were not allowed in the hall to view the games. Some coaches and parents I spoke to wanted to have the ability to view the games like they were able to do at UCT where they could stand on the balcony and peer over to look at the games. So I understand that not all venues have the capability of providing spectator seating or even the technology or infrastructure.

As a player I understand that you do not want spectators breathing down your neck while you are thinking. As an organiser I understand that you do not want spectators to close to the players. And as an arbiter I understand that there are FIDE rules that must be adhered to. As a sponsor again I also want to see interaction of the public, spectators and media with the players. I find it irritating that once your game is over you are classed as a spectator and cannot watch the other games and have to generally leave the playing area. I generally love the adrenalin rush of spectators watching my game. In the old days they used to say that he is playing for the gallery. Now I still play for the gallery. At the SA Open 2015, I played against IM Chumfwa from Zambia. We played against the corridor on table 7. The first six boards were in the circle. I played a sacrifice Nxg7 which the spectators enjoyed and had everyone watching the game. The game had a further few interesting moments with sacrifices which the spectators thoroughly enjoyed. When the game ended I was smsed and contacted by so many players that it made the entire event worthwhile! So I think we should be pragmatic and check what we can do about spectators and having the ability to see they game.
