COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Instruction in fundamental skills of power volleyball. Emphasis on overhand serve, pass, set, dig and hit. Team offense & defense strategies included.

OBJECTIVES: By the end of the semester, the student will be able to:

1.Understand the basic rules of the games.

2.Perform the basic skills of the game.

3.Understand the basic offenses and defenses.

4.Participate and understand the concept of team play.

5.Appreciate the game as a form of recreation and as an enjoyable spectator sport.

ATTENDANCE:

Active participation is mandatory. Ten points can be earned each day. Two points are deducted for improper attire and two points for non-participation. Students not participating fully will be given an adapted work-out. Students may miss 2 days, no penalty, USE THEM WISELY. There are NO excused absences & NO make ups.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

1.Students must be on time. Tardiness is defined as arriving after the scheduled start time. Students must sign in every day. Signing in, leaving & then returning does NOT constitute ON TIME. Further into the semester, you will have a job every day, either setting up or getting the VB’s out of the cage & you must earn your points for learning how to set up & helping get the equipment ready.

2.There will be a deduction of 2 points for every 20 minutes of missed class (1- 20 minutes late is 2 points off, 21-40 minutes late is 4 points off, after 41 minutes is 6 points off). Instructors watch is official time.

3.Students should be dressed in the proper attire. Shoes should provide proper support and cannot leave marks on the floor. Shorts, sweats and t-shirts are permissible. No jeans, hats, or scarves. Shoes must be kept tied. Displaying of underwear will not be tolerated. Points will be deducted for improper attire and repeat violators will be asked to leave the class. Kneepads are recommended.

4.Students may rent lockers in which to store personal items from the Campus Rec staff. Neither IUPUI nor the instructor will be responsible for personal items.

5.No children or guests may be present during class.

6.No food allowed in the gymnasium. Water bottles must be non-spill.

  1. If you are injured and cannot participate, students must still attend. Any injuries during class must be reported to the instructor immediately & any costs are the students’ responsibility. An alternate work out will be given.
  2. Participation in class includes helping gather up volleyballs after class, set up & take down of the nets & standards including pushing the cart into the closet. The closet door should be shut during class.

9.Students who leave early will have points deducted the same asarriving late. (see #2)

10.This class will focus on fundamentals. After the exam, league play will begin.

11.Jewelry must not be worn in class.

12. No hanging on the rims or climbing bleachers. Repeat violators will be asked to leave the class.

13.If cell phones are brought to the gym (see #4), they must be turned off during class. Unless an emergency, students making or receiving calls during class will lose their daily points, this includes texting.

  1. All safety rules will be strictly enforced. Students must participate at their own risk. (see #7)
  2. The instructor reserves the right to modify this syllabus if necessary.
  3. The State Law enacted July 1, 2012 makes smoking in IUPUI facilities or within 8 feet of any public entrance illegal. You may be subject to a fine.
  4. Cursing is not appropriate & will not be tolerated.
  5. Please wait in the concourse until the previous class has been dismissed.
  6. There will not be a study guide for the exam.

There will eventually be a net set up & take down schedule will continue for the remainder of the semester. EVERYONE must learn how & when you are not setting up, you should be getting the VB’s out You must earn your points for helping through-out the entire semester. THANK YOU !!

Administrative Withdrawal: A basic requirement of the course is that you will participate in all class meetings and conscientiously complete all required course activities and / or assignments. Keep in touch with me if you are unable to attend, participate, or complete an assignment on time. If you miss more than half of the required activities within the first 25% of the course without contacting me (direct email), you may be administratively withdrawn from this course. Example: our course meets twice per week; thus if you miss more than four classes the first four weeks, you may be withdrawn. Administrative withdrawal may have academic, financial, and financial aid implications. Administrative withdrawal will take place after the full refund period, and if you are administratively withdrawn from the course you will not be eligible for a tuition refund.
