Value of Tourism

Travel and tourism is one of the most significant economic drivers in the state – responsible for hundreds of billions of dollars in economic activity, millions of jobs and billions in tax revenues.

In 2015, California hosted more than 257 million visitors. These visitors spent $122.5 billion, spending that supported almost 1.1 million jobs. California travelers generated $5.4 billion in state taxes and $4.6 billion in local taxes to support vital public services including police, fire protection, health and homeless services, park maintenance, education and road repair. TID Protection

OVERVIEW

One of the primary funding sources used by cities and counties to market their destinations are tourism improvement districts (TIDs). TIDs are assessment districts that local businesses voluntarily establish to maintain and expand visitation to their region. Currently, there are 96 TIDs helping to expand economic opportunities through tourism across the state.

HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL – ROI ranging from $10-$20 for every $1:

These districts have proven to be extremely effective in growing local economies, creating jobs and generating local and state tax collections. In fact, recent studies of the return on investment realized by specific TIDs range from $10-$20 in hotel revenue for every $1 invested.

CONTINUATION IS ESSENTIAL:

The ability of localities to create TIDs has been challenged in a few parts of the state. In order to ensure California maintains its ability to maximize the benefits of tourism, TIDs must be protected. We hope we can count on your support to preserve TIDs to continue to create jobs, expanded economic opportunity and generate tax revenues.

Success of Visit CA

Visit California delivers millions of additional travelers and billions in additional spending to the state every year. In 2015, for every $1 spent by Visit California marketing the state to potential travelers, $330 was returned to California in the form of visitor spending. In 2014, Visit California’s global marketing programs delivered 4.7 million incremental trips and $10.3 billion in incremental spending.
