Innovation in Health Care Engineering

Core value or hype?

2 and 3 April 2009

Speaker briefing

NVTG / VTDV

The NVTG and VTDVwererespectively founded in 1947 and 1973 as associations for hospital engineers. In 2008 they accommodate all kinds of facility professionals. Members of the associations work in health care institutions or are active in organisations that provide products or services to the care sector.

What unites our members, nationally andinternationally,is ‘Caring for Health Care Facilities’. To realise and manage these health care facilities the responsible facility professionals have to continually improve their knowledge and be active in a peer network. Within the care sector in The Netherlands the NVTG and in Belgium the VTDV arethecollegial stages where they meet.

Our mission statementssummarise this ambition:The NVTG and the VTDV are associations of facility management professionals, which contributeto the continuous improvement of health care facilities in The Netherlandsand Belgiumby means of professional development, provision of information and the establishment of networks.

NVTG Congress andIFHE-Europe Congress

The annual two-day NVTG Congress is the highlight of the association’s activities and will be organised for the 61st time in 2009, in conjunction with the third IFHE-Europe Congress.

IFHE-Europe is a Regional Group of the International Federation of Hospital Engineering (IFHE), founded in 2005. Under the global umbrella of the IFHE, IFHE-Europe wants to focus specifically on the development of the field in Europe. Cooperation between fellow associations in different European countries should provide synergistic benefits. An important supporting task of IFHE-Europe will be to implement European legislation from Brussels/Strasbourg in practice.

It was decided to organise a biennial IFHE-Europe Congress to inform the members of the various national associations on developments in the European context. Thesecongressesare held as an add-on to the national congress of one of the affiliated associations. After previous editions in Baden Baden and Viennathe IFHE-Europe Congress 2009 will be held on 2 and 3 April in Goes, a provincial town in the southwest of the Netherlands.

Congress Theme

Seminars will be presented under the central congress theme 'innovation in health care engineering’, focusing on three specific areas:

-Real estatePatients, residents and visitors are making ever higher demands on the quality of accommodation in the healthcare sector. Innovative concepts in construction and technology contribute to an improved experience, improved wellbeing and safer treatment and residential environments. Sustainability plays an important role, focusing on zero energy - if not energy-exporting - buildings, flexible building and (complete) reuse of materials.

-TechnologyNew developments in (European) standardisation and regulation of healthcare engineering and its implications for patients and residents. Remote care, intelligent technological solutions and home automation

(ambient assisted living) are aspects that can realise reductions inoperating costs whilstretainingor even improving quality.

-ManagementCurrent developments influence management, both in terms of the (commercial) health care market and internal organisation. Buildings are becoming strategic assets, which poses new challenges for management. Internally, management has to deal with questions around the working practices of employees, their relationship with the organisation and changing working conditions, such as flexible and home working.

As mentioned above, the central theme of the congress will be ‘innovation’. The aforementionedspecific areas can focus on the healing environment, sustainability and reduction in energy usage, the impact of climate change, improvement of indoor comfort, independence/autonomy of clients and ‘total cost of ownership’.

Within the congress theme, the speakers will consider both the cure and care sectors. They are challenged to respond to the subtitle of the congress: innovation, core value or hype? Naturally the speakers are strongly urged to present their contributions from a European perspective.

Seminar programme and information

The national secretariats of the various associations will be requesting contributions from speakers from European countries. Initially, communication with speakers will be through those national secretariats.

The speaker selection committee is expecting to publish the complete seminar programme, which will be divided into plenary and parallel sessions, by December 2008.

The international European speaker selection committee is made up of board members of the Dutch NVTG and the Belgian VTDV: Gaston Lam, Leo van Namen, Roger Albertijn, Paul Merlevede. The working languages of the congress will beEnglish and Dutch, with simultaneous interpretation taking place.

Further information about the congress is also available on the websites of the NVTG and VTDV, and respectively.
