NURSING DEPARTMENT LECTURE

Guiding Eyes for the Blind has a Nursing Staff available to students in training. Marianne Coiro, is the Lead Nurse of Student Health Services. The Nursing Office is located across from lobby. The door to the office is parallel to the credenza in the lobby.

The Nursing Staff, of Registered nurses, are in the office from 6:00am to 8:30 am and 3:30pm to 6:00pm. These hours coincide with times when the students are in training at the GEB training center. There is a Registered nurse on call 24 hours a day for emergencies.

In an emergency, Yorktown Ambulance Corp will be called to transport a student to HudsonValleyMedicalCenter. This is a nearby, local, community hospital. A nurse will accompany the student and assist as needed.

Should a student require the services of a doctor in a non emergency situation, the Nursing department can arrange appointments and accompany the student. The student is responsible for payment at the time of service. The training staff will try their best to make up the lost training time. Extensive time dealing with medical issues will impact the training schedule and your success.

Students are expected to be independent in managing their health care needs. This includes diabetic management and medication administration. On arrival, students with diabetes, will meet with an RN for a diabetic assessment and management plan. Nurses are available to fill medication boxes, assist with insulin pumps and help the students follow prescribed diets.

The Nursing office supplies over the counter medications and first aid supplies. Should you need anything during the time the nurses are not present, please ask a trainer for assistance.

In each student room, in the medicine cabinet or by the mirror over the sink, you will find a Ziploc bag withfirst aid supplies. This can be used, should an injury occur in the student room, before coming to the nursing office.

It is important to maintain your health while training. Please remember to keep hydrated, follow your prescribed diet, take your medications as prescribed and rest whenever able. Please remember to dress appropriately for the weather, wear comfortable supportive shoes and use sunscreen and bug repellent when appropriate. If you have a bee allergy, remember to bring your Epi Pen.Remember to wash your hands frequently and use the provided hand sanitizer when water is not available.

The Nursing staff is always available should you feel stressed for any reason and need to talk. We are very good listeners and what is discussed, is kept in confidence. If you have a dog training issue, we will refer you to the trainers for their expertise.
