Report

It is still very much early days but already newly promoted Diss are finding life in the Premier Division of the Norfolk SRA Squash Leagues very much to their liking as they followed up last week’s victory over Potters with an excellent 15-8 victory over the fourteen times champions East Anglia. East Anglia II meanwhile got their season up and running as they beat the visitng Bob Carter Centre 15-9.

At Diss Jack Bell was drafted into the team at the last minute when Neil Cross pulled out with illness and he justified his call-up with a straight game victory over Ed Hancock. East Anglia edged ahead as Tim Allenden beat James Ramm in straight games and Ian Douglas won 3-1 against Tom Bobbins but Diss clinched victory as Martin Levens beat Ashley Briggs 13-10 in the fifth and then Steve Maitland won the first string match against Dave Gouldby 14-12 13-10 13-9.

At Lime Tree Road Mark Thomas beat young Milo Butler 3-1 and Stefan Lubek won in straight games against Gary Snelling but for East Anglia Nigel Gillick beat Eddie Webber 3-0 while in the second string match Andrew Woods came from behind to beat Andrew Trim 3-2 and in the battle of the number ones David Youngs came out on top against Liam Nolan 13-2 14-12 10-13 18-16.

This season Barnham Broom have got two teams in Division One after the first team finished bottom of the Premier Division last season. They showed they are determined to bounce straight back with a resounding 20-0 maximum against North Norfolk.Simon Howling, Craig Aldred, Peter Hubbard, Jonathan Pearson and Vince Somers all won their matches in straight games.

Barnham Broom II were also in good form as they beat Diss II 16-9. Wesley Hicks beat Lee Harris 3-1, Ian Osmond won 3-0 against Paul Nevis and then, in a marathon third string match, Alex Cockburn beat Fergus Clark 13-11 10-13 13-11 7-13 18-16. Diss took the first and second string matches as Jack Bell and Tom Hunt both won 3-1 against Adam Goodson and Stuart Sutton respectively.

Fakenham picked up a maximum in Division Two beating a four man UEA side 20-5. Nicky Green, Martin Jolley and Adam Sinkins all won their matches 3-1 while Liam Sullivan had to come from behind to beat Luke Grindle 3-2. At Fleggburgh Broadland II won 18-5 against Beccles. William Henden and Richard Barnes both won their matches in straight games while Justin Millar and Jon Bird both won 3-1. David Hall was the one Beccles winner coming out on top 11-15 17-15 15-6 19-17 in the first string match.

Cromer made it two wins from two starts in Division Threebeating Fakenham II 18-7. Matt Copeman won in straight games, Martin Sanville and Peter Arbuthnot both won 3-1 and John Baker recovered from being 0-2 down to beat Steve Horn 3-2. Jason Smith who beat Stephen Watts 3-1 was Fakenham’s one winner.

The Bob Carter Centre II also won their second match, beating Barnham Broom III 18-6. Dean Goodrum won 3-1 for Barnham but for the Carter Centre both Steve Cunningham and Marco Valori won in straight games, Ian Pearson won 3-1 and Graham Sibley came from behind to beat Ian Osmond 15-13 6-15 10-15 16-14 15-13. Bannatyne’s III were too strong for Broadland Hunters as they picked up a 20-2 maximum. Giles Hart and Christian Olivieri both won 3-1 while Alastair Florence, Gareth Jones and Chris Batey all won in straight games.

Finally UEA II had a good 16-8 victory away at Oasis. For the home side Alan Jermany won 3-2 and Richard Hatch won in straight games but 3-1 wins for Ash Sinha and Andy Keel and a 3-0 win for Richard Bennett over John Milton gave the students their victory
