Brian Maxwell Award – Tips for Applications

It is important that the applicant effectively communicate their achievements to the scholarship selection committee. The selection is made by two volunteers who read every application submitted. Applicants that made the short list in prior years emphasized their achievements in a clear and concise manner. The unsuccessful applications contained lengthy narratives and letters of recommendation in small print that was difficult to read.

Try to hold the attention of the reader throughout your entire application. Before preparing your application, please follow these guidelines.

Letters of Recommendation

·  Should not exceed 200 words and character fonts should not be smaller than 12 point

·  Recommendations should accent specific attributes of the applicant

Applicants’ Narrative

·  Typed, not to exceed 500 words with proper grammar and paragraph spacing and written personally by the applicant

·  Focus on attributes that best qualifies for the award

·  Articulate non-athletic achievements such as community work, school participation, volunteer work etc.

·  Have a strong summary or conclusion to complete the narrative

Describe one or two meaningful achievements unrelated to athletics: (provide separate attachment)

Brian Maxwell was a successful distance runner and entrepreneur asa co-founder of Power Bar with his wife Jennifer. He attended Victoria Park Secondary School from 1968-72. As a distance runner, basketball guard and wrestler at Victoria Park, Brian had a doggeddetermined dedication to be the best at his chosen sport.Brian excelled inTrack & Field Long Distance and Cross-Country running. He was anOFSAA Champion and Canadian Junior, Juvenile and senior champion. While on Scholarship at University of Berkeley,Brian attained a degree in Architecture andKinesiology. He was the winner of many InternationalMarathons (3rd placein Boston Marathon and twice at Ottawa)and a member of the 1980CanadianOlympic Marathon team. Later in life he found out that a defective heart valve had robbed him his whole life of an estimated 1 to 3% of his aerobic power which would have translated to a handicap of close to 5 minutes making him a sub 210 marathoner!! Preference shall be given to a student whose character is reflective of qualities thatBrian Maxwelldemonstrated in his life: honesty, integrity, compassion and an unwavering quest toaccomplish the best he could academically and athletically whilesupporting his fellow team mates.
