NOTES FOR SARA 12 HOUR SPRING ROGAINE

Hal’s 2001, Saturday 13th October 11am – 11pm

Welcome to HAL’s 2001. We set this rogaine with a number of aims. A good navigational challenge, lots of checkpoints for everyone, plenty of route choice and most of all we wanted to inject some fun into the event. We hope we are successful – do tell us what you think.

Some of you may have already remembered that HAL is the rogue computer from Space Odyssey 2001. (it’s one letter back from IBM). The course setters therefore no responsibility for any “rogueness” and we blame it wholeheartedly on HAL.

Below are some final details that may help. Happy travelling!

Start, Finish and Hash House

Please fill in your intention sheet and return it to Admin. We would also like to know if you are planning to stay for breakfast. We would also like volunteers to help pick up controls on Sunday – 1 hr each is all we ask!

For novices and less experienced navigators, please let admin know if you would like a rogaine tutorial before you start. The course setters are available from 9am – 10:45 for tutoring.

Briefing will be at 10.45am, in time for the start at 11.

The Hash House will open at 5pm.

The late penalty is 10 points per minute for every late finish minute after 11pm, and teams back more than 30 minutes late will be disqualified.

Map

The north lines in blue on the map are MAGNETIC north lines. (ie they will line up with your compass exactly).

You must stay out of the out of bounds areas marked on the map. Where a narrow break is shown in the out of bounds hatching please stay on the track or fenceline as indicated.

The exception to this rule is Control 25 which is on the Heysen trail and you CAN get through the out of bounds area at this point (sorry we forgot to show it on the map).

The routes followed by the tracks in Kyeema Conservation Park are not mapped exactly. Make sure you don’t cross any electric fences when leaving Kyeema – that is private property and we do not have access.

There are some inconsistencies in the vegetation markings across the four basemaps that we have used. As mentioned before the small square of pines in the top north west corner, Kyeema Conservation Park and the private land have not been transferred from the more accurate orienteering maps and therefore tend to be less accurate. When in doubt use the contours on the map!

There is some logging and therefore some extra tracks in the vicinity of controls 82 and 42.

Safety

Please familiarise yourself with the safety route on the back of the map. We will do this loop at 2pm, 5pm, 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30 (if necessary) – as indicated on your map. The organisers can also be contacted on their mobiles at anytime. Heather - 041 786 2206. Andy – 0402 389 706

Competitors should at all times be alert to the possibility of hazards. Be very careful around the two Quarries that have been used. Please take care when you approach any watercourse, particularly at night.

Respect for Property

Some of this rogaine is on private land which the owners have kindly given us permission to use for the event. Please respect private property. In particular, competitors should not pass within 100 metres of a dwelling and they should stay away from stock with young.

And finally ……FUN

As I’ve mentioned, the terrain for this event is a beautiful mixture of natural scrub, open pine forests, not so open pine forests and farmland. The eastern side can provide views through to the Coorong – Jennie is the Landowner near control 92 and she encourages you to admire her view.

Kuitpo forest south of the hash house tends to be the thickest area and will require the finest navigation, (Make sure you bring your compass and pace counting skills).

Checkpoint 26 is at the golf club and is only available until the club closes at sunset. Arthur Fisher has a drinks fridge so take your money if you’re inclined to buy a nice cold soft drink.

Pick up any rubbish you see out there – even if it is not yours and especially if it has been inadvertently dropped by another team. (or the course setters – I lost a pen). A special prize for the best Samaritan!

Yes mystery points are exactly that! The number of points the control is worth will remain a mystery until you get there when the number of the control will make it obvious where to punch and how many points the control is worth.
