Course Description
In so doing, we will work towards developing connections from previous mathematical courses to promote an understanding of the interrelatedness of mathematics as a whole. Using these relationships, we can solve problems, identify patterns, and investigate new phenomena. Topics being studied will include measurement including dimensional analysis, length, area, and volume; number operations including rounding, estimation, decimals and percentage; The Rule of Pythagoras, the Cartesian plane and analytical geometry, congruence and similarity, geometry and trigonometry.

Students will receive a work text, and have access to materials online.

Course Standards
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics call for a fresh approach to how mathematics education takes place in the classroom. Not only are teachers challenged to rethink math curriculum at every level, but it pushes students to strive to achieve ever higher expectations because college and career readiness is the goal for every student. Therefore we have two sets of standards within the CCSS: the standards for Mathematical Practices and the standards for Mathematical Content.
Lifelong Learning Standard
With the CCSS as the foundation, each and every class will focus on training students to become a lifelong learner. To accomplish this each class will incorporate problem solving strategies, learning utilizing visual resources, encapsulating lessons under Big Ideas and Essential Questions, incorporating interactive learning through online resources and differentiated instruction which addresses students’ gaps in prior learning.

Methods of Assessment
The year will begin with a diagnostic assessment to determine the current level of mastery of each student. Formative assessments will be given on a daily basis through the use of interactive technology and resources. Summative assessment will be given through the use of quizzes (weekly) tests (at the completion of each unit), and semester exams. Students who are absent when a summative assessment is given will be required to take the assessment after school following the HHMS school-wide policy for making up assessments. Online course work will have built in formative and summative assessments as well.
Homework
This is an essential component to mastering Algebra I and therefore is required. Homework will consist of completing handouts, watching videos, or working through an interactive tool, as well as online assessments. Homework is graded for completion. Students must show all work to earn credit. Late homework is not accepted unless approved by Ms. Robinson.
Ms. Robinson BYOD Policy - We will use technology in our class if it is in compliance with school policies, and is beneficial to the topic discussed. You will keep your device out of site until it is time to use it. It should not be seen nor heard. When devices are used in Algebra class, HHMS BYOD policy will be followed.

Make-Up Work
We have a school-wide make-up policy which is outlined in the HHMS handbook which is online.
