After Prom

After Prom is Looking for You!

We invite you to join us as we invest in our youth. The alcohol-free and drug-free post-prom and post-graduation all-night celebrations are truly a gift - a gift of life and for the preservation of our future.The success of this celebration is the result of the efforts of parents and volunteers, the support of our school.

Whether you are a new 9th grade parent looking for your niche somewhere in the school or a senior parent wanting to make sure the students have the best time, we want you to come out and join in the fun.

Last year’s committee chairs were almost all seniors so we are looking to rebuild. If you can spare a few hours the night of, or want be on the steering committee, we want you. We have many open positions and if you are or know of someone who loves a good party, or just have questions, please send an e-mail to .

Band News

The Northwest HS Band is selling White House ornaments, which are available for $20.00 each. Proceeds will benefit NWHS Instrumental Music Program. Orders may be picked-up at the NWHS Business Office after November 16, 2009 between 7:30 am and 3:30 pm. Special delivery/pick-up arrangements can be made by contacting Mila at number below. Silent Auction

The Silent Auction will be held on Thursday, November 12. Cut out of work early and start the night at Glory Days Grill. Doors open at 4:00 p.m. There will be drink specials.....free appetizers....door prizes. The Silent Auction and dollar raffles begin at 5:30p.m. in the NWHS Gymnasium. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. by Outback Steakhouse. The Live Auction begins at 7:15 p.m.

Great Prizes include signed Sports Memorabilia, Hotel Packages, Dinners Out, a personal Chef, Golf Packages, Local Stacation Deals etc.

College and Career Information

College Application – the Common Application

Seniors applying to colleges using the online Common Application should know that hard copies of the Common Application are available in the College/Career Information Center or online at https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/default.aspx.

College Visits at Northwest and College Fairs

Fairs: Students still wishing to participate in the National Hispanic College Fair field trip on November 10 should have their permission forms returned by Wednesday, November 4 (extended deadline). There is still room on the bus. If participation is low, buses may be cancelled. Please visit the College/Career Information Center on Tuesday, November 3 to pick up your permission form. The field trip will be to the Universities at Shady Grove. A list of participating colleges is available in the College/Career Information Center.

Financial Aid Workshop

Please mark your calendars for the November 18 Financial Aid Workshop. An expert from the Maryland Higher Education Commission will be available to walk parents and students through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the financial aid process in general. The workshop will begin at 6:30 pm in the Auditorium.

Scholarship Applications/Information:

The Violet Richardson Award is seeking applications from young ladies between the ages of 14 and 17 who have gone above and beyond the required community service hours. Visit the College/Career Center for your application. The deadline to apply is December 1.

New scholarships are listed on the JAG Scholarship Bulletin. They include a new ACT Poster Contest, Gates Millennium, KFC Scholars & Princeton Prize in Race Relations. Watch your scholarship deadlines!

Upcoming deadlines include the Comcast Leaders & Achievers and Prudential Spirit of Community. One new opportunity has been added this week, the Sherry S. Hintz Scholarship; open to juniors and seniors meeting specific criteria.


On-Site Admissions at NWHS - Virginia State University
Date: Thursday, November 12
Time: 9:00 am
There will be a short general admissions information session beginning at 9. Students interested in on-site admissions will be interviewed after the general information session. Students interested in the general admission visit will sign up following the high school visit protocol:
Visit the College/Career Information Center to sign the High School Visit Roster and receive your pass. Students interested in the on-site interview MUST complete the Student Interest Form and return it to the College/Career Information Center by Monday, November 9.
On-Site Admissions Applicant Criteria:
- Cumulative GPA of 2.2
- SAT, critical reading and math combined score of 800 or ACT of 17
- Application fees waived
- No recommendation required
- No essay required
- Completed application (online or paper copy). If completing your application online, you must bring a copy with you to the interview.
This is a phenomenal opportunity to receive an admission decision and/or feedback from an admission counselor who would love to have you on their campus. Please remember to sign up for the general admissions visit and/or return the Student Interest Form to interview no later than Monday, November 9.

Directories

The Northwest High School Directories are in and you can still purchase one. The cost is $5 (payable to “Northwest High School”). Bring a check to Ms. Shapiro in Room 206 at lunch on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Quantities are limited.

Flu Clinics

Montgomery County’s Health and Human Services, in cooperation with Shady Grove and Washington Adventist Hospital, will offer an injectable H1N1 vaccine (thimerosal- free) clinic for PREGNANT WOMEN by appointment only on Wednesday, November 4. Appointments can be made on Monday, November 2 between 3 and 5 p.m. by calling 240-777-4040.

There is currently NO other vaccine available at this time (no nasal spray and no injectable).

The clinics originally scheduled for November 4, 11 and 18 at Northwood, Rockville and Northwest High Schools are CANCELLED.

Food Drive

The Northwest High School PTSA and Northwest Key Club will co-sponsor a food drive from October 30 to November 20, 2009 to benefit Germantown HELP, Gaithersburg HELP and Manna Foods. Our goal is to reach 100% household participation with the food drive in order to help stock these food pantries.

Students can donate non-perishable food items during school in their first period classrooms (look for the boxes), at the Powder Puff football game on November 4th or at the Northwest Idol competition on November 5th!

Northwest Idol Competition

The Northwest Idol competition will be held on Thursday, November 5 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the auditorium. The first place winner will receive $200. Guest judges include Rickey Payton, Sr. from the Grammy Awards and Shawn Cosby, Alvin Ailey choreographer of the year. Tickets will cost $5 at the door.

Poinsettia Sale – NW Instrumental Dept.

The Northwest High School Instrumental Music Department is pleased to announce the 4th Annual Poinsettia Sale! We are offering 10” pots with 5 plants in each pot and 20-25 blooms in Red, White, Pink or Marble. A decorative pot cover and sleeve for traveling protection will also be provided with each 10” pot purchased. These are beautiful Poinsettias and may be purchased from a NWHS Instrumental Music Department representative for $25.00 each.

We are also offering 24” Fraser Fir Wreaths for $24.00 each and 36” Fraser Fir Wreaths for $36.00 each. Get order from on http://nwinstrumental.org/ or see Mr. Rouse in the band room. Powder Puff Football Game

This year’s Powder Puff Football game will be held on November 4th at 6:00 p.m. in the football stadium. The Juniors’ coach is Kevin Corpuz and the Seniors’ coach is Mike Neubeiser. All tickets for students and staff will be $5. At this point, the game will go on rain or shine.Be sure to come out and support the players and don’t miss the halftime show featuring Junior and Senior cheerleading squads!!! We’re looking forward to great night!!

SAT/ACT Information

LIFT Program at University of Maryland

LIFT's SAT Preparation 6-week course provides students with the study skills and strategies necessary for success on the SAT. The course is offered on Saturdays, 9 am to 12:30 pm, three times during the academic year and coincides with the official administration of the SAT.

January 30 - March 6 (Official SAT administered on March 13)
April 24 - May 29 (Official SAT administered on June 5)

Practice Tests Sponsored by the PTSA

The PTSA will sponsor three practice tests for students. Preregistration costs are $15 per test or $20 on the day of the test. The tests are administered at NWHS on the following Saturdays. Fruit Sales – Class Fundraiser

Seniors – two words – “SELL FRUIT!” The senior class is holding a Fruit Sale. Please help support the Class of 2010. From now until November 25th, senior class members will be taking orders. All sales and Order forms must be in before Thanksgiving Break. See Ms. Dorga for details. Orders will arrive in time for the holidays.

If you leave campus during lunch, you must meet the eligibility requirements and have a sticker on your school ID. See Mrs. Roberton in room 322 before school or during lunch to get your sticker put on your ID.
