Principal’s Comments

The school counseling team is an integral part of the school community at Northwest Elementary School. We have successfully implemented a PBIS program: PAWS (Positive Choices, Act Respectful, Work Responsibly, Safe Behavior) in an effort to create a safe and positive environment for all students, staff and families.

The administration meets regularly with the school counselors to discuss students that are struggling academically, behaviorally and/or emotionally. The School Guidance Counselor and School Adjustment Counselor are committed to providing comprehensive services to support student achievement. The counselors teach a unit of guidance lessons in each class every year and also work with the teachers to deliver the Second Step curriculum. The district has taken steps toprovide proactive services to all students and is in support ofthe MA Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs. We will continue to increase the use of data to support student outcomes.

Student Results

Social-Emotional development is an important task for elementary school students. They must develop skills for respecting self and others, working cooperatively and understanding individual differences. Objective # 3 of the Leominster Public Schools District Improvement Plan is: Develop and implement a coordinated system of support to advance the academic and social-emotional growth and development of all students. As part of the comprehensive guidance lessons in the 2014-15 school year, a unit of 6 friendship lessons was delivered in a second grade classroom in an effort to do meet this objective. The lessons covered topics such as good friendship behaviors, cooperation, complimenting others and joining a group. The students were given a pre-test and a post-test and their results indicate significant student learning.

Friendship Pre-Test Data

Friendship Post-Test Data

Prior to the friendship lessons, many of the students were unable to correctly answer several of the questions on the pre-test. Only 40% of the class answered questions #1 and 5 correctly. Only 27 % of the class responded correctly to question #2 and 47% correctly answered question #7.

On the post-test, 87% of students correctly responded to questions #1, 2 and 5 and 7. Overall, more students correctly answered 6 out of the 8 questions on the post-test which indicates that the students learned a great deal and benefitted from the lessons.

Percentage of Correct Answers on Pre vs. Post-Test

Focus for Improvement

  • School counselors will continue to provide comprehensive guidance lessons to all classes/students and will visit classrooms at the start of each year to talk about their role at the school
  • School counselors will develop a curriculum of guidance lessons for each grade building upon what the students were taught the year before
  • Survey classroom teachers on the needs of their particular class prior to beginning classroom guidance lessons
  • Regularly update the school guidance website to inform parents and the community of the programs offered, outcome data and suggest resources that can be used at home
