Pupil Premium Policy

Date: September 2015

Northgate School Arts College (Academy Trust)

Pupil Premium Policy

The Pupil Premium (PP) was introduced in April 2011 by the Coalition Government to provide additional support for Looked After Children (LAC) and those from low income families. The extra funding is made available to schools to help them narrow the attainment gap that still exists between pupils from disadvantaged and more affluent backgrounds.

Objectives

Objectives for the use on pupil premium:

  1. The Pupil Premium will be used to provide additional educational support to raise the standard of achievement for these pupils
  2. The funding will be used to narrow and close the gap between the achievement of these pupils and their peers
  3. As far as possible, the school will use the additional funding to address any underlying inequalities between children eligible for Pupil Premium and others
  4. The school will ensure that the additional funding reaches the pupils who need it most and that it makes a significant impact on their education and lives
  5. The school will work closely with parents of pupil premium students to ensure that we collectively ensure the success of these students.

At NSAC we:

  • Ring fence the funding so we can always spend it on the Free School Meals (FSM) and Looked After Children target group.
  • We offer the families of the FSM group as much additional support in their homes in the management of their child ie home visits/behaviour strategies/parent/family support as appropriate.
  • We monitor our data in the category of FSM and target those children in order to ensure a narrowing of the attainment gap.
  • Have a clear and robust Performance Management Process, linked to pupil performance and teacher’s pay.
  • Have regular Key Stage Lead meetings to monitor progress.
  • Inform and involve Governors at all stages.
  • Deputy Head works with Business Manager in tracking the allocation and can account clearly for spending to SLT and Governors
  1. Let pupils know they are succeeding through methods they understand and value
  2. We will publish online information about how we have used the premium
  3. We will monitor, evaluate and review the success of the impact of the Pupil Premium funding

The intended outcomes for all students in receipt of Pupil Premium funding were identified as:

  • Their attainment would be in line with their peers

Strategies we use:

  • Additional 1:1 support
  • Adapting the physical environment
  • Additional Speech & Language or other therapies as identified
  • Purchase of additional ICT equipment to support access to curriculum
  • Buying new, focussed, motivating resources for the individual child.
  • Work very closely with parents/carers and provide home visits.
  • Review of individual behaviour plans
  • Extended days – attendance at before and after school clubs
  • Extra curricular activities that are carried out off school site – Riding for Disabled, residential trips
  • Purchase resources for target groups – self-esteem, behaviour/anger management
  • Rigorous data tracking to identify any groups in expected progress

The allocation of Pupil Premium has had a significant impact in improving the attainment of targeted pupils. Analysis of pupil progress data using CASPA demonstrates that virtually all of our pupils who were entitled to free school meals or who are classified as looked after children made expected progress in every subject.
