Position Description
NorthernIllinoisUniversity invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean for the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology. The College seeks a dynamic, articulate, energetic leader who will build on the College’s strong foundation and effectively address future opportunities and challenges.
Chartered in 1895, NorthernIllinoisUniversity is a research, doctoral grantinginstitution with a commitment to serving the region through university-owned extensioncenters in Naperville, Rockford, and Hoffman Estates. The university serves a diverse student body of 25,000. There is seven degree granting colleges that together offer 51 undergraduate majors and 70 graduate degree programs. Approximately 18,000 undergraduatesstudy on the DeKalb campus which is located in one of the country’s most vibrantregionsjust 65 miles west of Chicago.
The College of Engineering and Engineering Technology, founded in 1985, has grown into a highly regarded college with quality programs delivered by 41 well qualified faculty members who are dedicated to delivering a dynamic and innovative curriculum. The College is accredited by ABET and NAIT. Approximately 1200 undergraduate students and 175 students seeking Master’s degrees are served primarily on the DeKalb campus, but delivery is active also at the three suburban facilities. Fourstrong discipline-based academic departments compose the College: Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Technology. The College offers B.S. degrees in each department.Technology offers a Bachelor's of Science for both engineering technology and industrial technology programs. Graduate degrees offered include Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management.
The College is unique nationally in that it offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees across engineering and technology as well as several graduate certificates. Program diversity serves a broader range of students interested in professional engineering and technology careers. To further its uniqueness, it has maintained a commitment to leading initiatives that involve secondary schools in mathematics and science reform through external funding.
Responsibilities:
The Dean of the College of Engineeringand Engineering Technology reports to the Provost and is responsible for the overall academic, administrative, and fiscal leadership of the college. Specifically, these responsibilities will include:
- Advancing the shared vision, mission, core values, and programsof the College
- Promoting excellence in teaching, research, and development to support a balanced mission
- Developing external relationships and fundraising opportunities in support of the College’s programs and research and development endeavors
- Directing a budget of over five million to support its mission
- Supporting faculty, staff, and student partnerships with the business and industry community
- Interactingeffectively with faculty, staff, students, parents,alumni, business, industry and academic communities
- Sustaining a strong commitment to diversity
- Continuing its historical commitment to partnering with secondary school and community colleges.
Qualifications:
- A record of progressively responsible administrative experiences in an academic setting, including managing budgets, facilities and curricula, while leading faculty
- Demonstrated ability to obtain resources, support, and funding
- Strong commitment to intellectual inquiry and high standards for research and teaching
- Experience building partnerships with business and industry community and alumni
- Excellent communication skills that permit open dialog with faculty, staff, students, and internal and external constituencies and partners
- Earned doctorate from an accredited institution with a distinguished record of academic achievement sufficient to qualify as a professor with tenure in one of CEET’s academic departments or related area.
- Experience in the recruitment and employment of new faculty
Compensation:
An excellent compensation and benefits package, consistent with the importance of this position, will be provided to the successful candidate. Salary is negotiable based upon qualifications and experience.
