This short walk is intended for people who are just getting back into walking after a period of inactivity, or who are not sure if they can manage more than 30 min at a time.

Starting from Mowbray doctors surgery, head South down Malpas Road. Cross Mill Lane at the roundabout with care, then walk down to the pelican crossing beside the station. Cross here, then head into County Hall through the main gates. Follow the drive round to the right and then follow down the side of the building and turn right across the end of the car park. Turn left round the corner of the building and then right to follow the length of the car park and around the path at the end, tothe path between the houses and the school playing fields.

On Broomfield Avenue turn right and then left into Normanby Road and left again into Cleveland drive. Follow this as it curves back to Broomfield Avenue before turning left and then right into Thornley Avenue. Go through the pedestrian gate back into the County Hall grounds and immediately turn right to follow down behind the East Block. Go pretty well straight ahead here to get onto the car park and eventually through to Racecourse Lane.

Cross the road and turn left, past the front of the courthouse and back to the roundabout. Cross South Parade with care and return up Malpas Road to the doctors surgery.

There are a number of options on this route which can give variety without a significant increase in length.

  • After crossing the road outside the station, turn right and take the track between County Hall grounds and the railway line. Follow this up to the gate, then take the pedestrian gate to the left and walk round the recreation ground to regain the original route as it passes the schools.
  • In dry weather, you may want to walk across the grass outside County Hall to admire the flowers around the ponds. The ponds were built as emergency water supplies during the war, and are very deep so please do not fall in. You might also want to walk across the grass of the football field, to get to the far end of the car park – this is possible, but the path of the end may be muddy as it is used by the footballers to get to their cars.
  • In Normanby Road, instead of taking the first left take the second left down Mulgrave Drive and turn left again into Ormesby Crescent, or on Normanby Road take the third left into Ormesby Crescent directly. In either case, at the end of Ormesby Crescent turn right into Cleveland drive.
  • Since this adds a bit to the distance, at the end of Cleveland drive turn right and then left into racecourse Lane to save a bit of time here.
