The people
People who take public transportation come from different groups, different age groups, professions, etc. In some stations, travelers range from the young to the old, from families to single travelers, from locals and tourists whereas in other areas, businessmen and office workers are the main groups.
Most of the travelers are rather familiar with the transportation routes. They do not look at signs and help for directions. They know where to go and which bus, subway line, tram, train to take. The knowledge is in already the head. They do look at the electronic timetable board especially in a comparatively bigger bus terminal. Since different buses can be assigned to the same exit and different subway lines arrive at the same track, the traveler needs to pay attention to the information board, to see when exactly the next bus or subway he is going to take arrives.
There are always people (like me) are new to the city and public transportations. They have for example a subway map in hands, and look for signs and directions. They depend very much on the information and helpfrom the environment, including help from other people. In a big station, T-Centralen for instance, he could be confused about which way to go: is this way leading to red line? Is this leading to exit? Oh to left and right are both OK.
On subway train, people read newspapers, books, talking on phone, talk with their companions.
Stations and terminals
The places look different between subway stations, train stations, tram stations, bus stops and bus terminals. Different subway stations look different too. In general, in a typical subway station, there is the station name and signs about the exit, for example Kundsgarden to left, Glaman Stan to right. There is electronic information board telling what lines arrive at this track, in how many minutes will the next several subway arrive, chronologically. The station can be outdoor and indoor. Each station has a unique appearance with paintings, drawings and decorations. There are subway maps, subway timetable and map of the city.
The navigation of a small subway station is simple. To either left or right you can go to the exit. To a transit subway station, there are signs about other lines. In a major transit station, the navigation is much more complex. Tracks are built in different levels, so user needs to go down or up rather many times. There are many exists leading to different destinations. Also there are much more signs andinformation given in a major transit station, including information about other transportation means – the specific buses or trams and their timetables. Similarly, information about subways and other transportation means are given at a big bus terminal. Uplifters are provided in most of the subway stations, although there are exceptions.
Newspapers provided in the subway station are Metro, City, …
A typical bus stop is outdoor stop with a bench and three-sided glass around it. There is a map and timetable. There is nolist of all the stops the bus goes, only the departure, transit and destination station.
A tram stop looks similar to a bus stop. It provides the city map, timetable and the particular route with all the stops.
A commuter train station looks similar to an outdoor subway station.
To get into the subway, there are self-service controls and examiner. In most cases, self-service controls are for monthly ticket usersand examiner examines the single ticket users. In some of the subway stations, there are entries designed only for special group of people
what does it look like? How can one navigate a buss terminal? Do the public transportation services in Stockholm offer special services to their clients? How is a buss or subway terminal designed? Also check the busses or subway and take note of their design and the services offered during trips ( Maps? Information about destination? Newspaper? Etc.)
