1. Statement of Program Goals and Objectives for existing program, including new changes:

The mission of Gavilan college states: “In an environment that cultivates creativity, stimulates curiosity and emphasizes student learning, Gavilan College serves its community by providing high quality educational and support services that prepare students for transfer, technical and public service careers, life-long learning and participation in a diverse global society.”

The Gavilan College Media Arts-Television Broadcast A.A. Degree and Certificate of Achievement supports the college mission by teaching students multiple forms of communications media; including television, video production and print. The degree and certificate encourages creativity, stimulating curiosity and emphasizing hands on student learning in the creation of content appropriate for a world-wide audience, reaching it through the web.

After completing the Media Arts Degree in Broadcast Television, students are prepared to transfer to 4-year colleges or universities and select from a variety of majors including: Television, Film, Theater, Marketing and Broadcast Journalism. Students in Media Arts-Broadcast Television participate in learning experiences that teach them the history and development of human communication and storytelling; giving them knowledge and skills for creating and producing content for broadcast on television and the Internet. The projects created and produced by Gavilan College students are prepared for broadcast on the Gavilan Educational Channel (GavTV18) and on the web (

The Certificate of Achievement in Broadcast Television is an option for students wishing to focus and finish a course of study that will upgrade their skills and gives them experiences in learning how to produce content for broadcast on television or the web. It informs future employers from community based organization, educational institutions and the entertainment industry that the student has completed a comprehensive course of study giving him or her specialized training in all aspects of video production.

Program Learning Outcomes:

  • perform confidently and safely in set-up and operation of video and audio equipment in live or live to tape studio or field production.
  • demonstrate knowledge and skills in digital editing for broadcast television.
  • discuss and critique production values in film and television including: lighting, audio, set design, make-up.
  • demonstrate and apply best practices in working on a television/video production crew.
  • describe and perform the knowledge, skills and abilities related to the production process including: pre-production, production

2. Catalog Description for existing Program, including new option:

The existing program, Media Arts Broadcast Television AA Degree prepares student for transfer into a four year college majoring in Media Arts, Mass Communications, Marketing, Film or Television Studies. The new option makes the pathway to transfer clear.

The Gavilan College Catalogue description:

The Media Arts Broadcast Television Degree prepares students for transfer in Media Arts, Mass Communications, Film and Television studies. Students in Media Arts-Broadcast Television participate in learning experiences that teach skills in pre-production, production and post-production including: writing, acting, camera operation,editing, audio, directing in studio and field production scenarios for television production. The projects created and produced by students are prepared for broadcast on GavTV-Cable Channel 18, the Gavilan Educational Channel, Blip.TV, You-tube and streaming on the Web. GavTV programming includes: music, theater, dance, arts, sports, news and special events. Original programs aired on the GavTV 18 are: News & Views Live!, Art is Essential, The Gavilan Hour, Gavilan Rams Football and Let’s Ask Alice.
