Summer Meeting

The August 9th Symposium on Remediation Projects in Northeast Ohio was an informative and enjoyable event. Some exciting strategic plans for NOCHPS were discussed. Ron and John will be sharing the information with you in the coming weeks. Thank you to all of the participants and attendees.

Fall Meeting

TBD, NOCHPS members should feel free to make referrals for speakers or to volunteer to make presentations during NOCHPS meetings.

Symposium on Homeland Security

Look for an upcoming Symposium on Homeland Security CY 2004.

Science Teacher Workshop

NOCHPS will sponsor a Science Teacher Workshop at KSU’s NEO Beam Facility. This workshop will be accredited by the Kent State University College of Education and will be held over two Saturdays on Feb 7th and Feb 21st.

NOCHPS Goals for CY 2004

Be prepared to help set and achieve NOCHPS goals for;

·  Membership recruitment drive

·  Financial Goals

·  Education Goals including; 1) Science Teacher Workshop during Spring 2004 and 2) Placement for Kent State University Interns.

Homeland Security

NOCHPS and Kent State University discussed the possibility of becoming more actively involved in providing radiation training to first responders. A Cleveland Police Officer attended the October 10th science teacher workshop on “Detecting Radiation and Nuclear Technology” at KSU’s NEO Beam facility. Ron Leuenberger was one of the workshop presenters. Apparently Cleveland Police Officers do not currently receive formal radiation training nor are they issued radiation instrumentation. The Officer was quite pleased with the workshop and planned to recommend that the Cleveland Police Department consider future workshops for Police Officers.

KSU is interested in establishing a Radiological Laboratory in Northeast Ohio in conjunction with Homeland Security. Two Federal Laboratories have conveyed verbal support for this endeavor.

Please let us know your thoughts on these activities.

Academic Programs

(Nuclear Engineering Technology)

Kent State University and Lakeland Community College are collaborating on a 2+2 degree program articulation in Nuclear Engineering Technology. LCC currently offers an Associate of Technical Studies with a focus on Nuclear Engineering Technology in partnership with FirstEnergy’s Perry Nuclear Power Plant. For additional information about Lakeland’s NET program visit: http://www.lakeland.cc.oh.us/ACADEMIC/ENGINEER/nuclear/

or contact: Marty Shingler, LCC NET Program Coordinator, (440) 953-7293

Ed Filppi, KSU’s PEBT, (440) 632-1780 or (330) 672-1445

(Radiation Processing)

KSU’s Program on Electron Beam Technology submitted a grant proposal to the Council of Graduate Schools for the development of a Professional Science Master’s degree on Radiation Processing. For additional information about this proposed degree program contact: Carlos Vargas-Aburto, KSU’s PEBT, (440) 632-1780

Roberto Uribe, KSU’s PEBT, (440) 632-1780

(Health Physics Technician Program)

In response to the aging work force, Perry NPP is currently looking into the possibility of developing a 2-year Health Physics Technician Program with a local college/university. We would like to make it a generic program to develop HP Technicians for any of the industrial, medical, university, decommissioning or other likely work environments.
We would like to hear from other NOCHPS members that would benefit from such a program by potentially hiring graduates or hiring students for internships.

Additionally, any curriculum ideas or needs with respect to your particular discipline would be appreciated.

A comment from ED:

I am quite excited about NOCHPS’ potential and future. Our chapter is comprised of professional and cordial members. The field of radiation science is very exciting. Our meetings are informative and enjoyable. Encourage your colleagues and students to become involved in chapter events. Acknowledge and support our chapter officers and board members. Ed
